How to cancel and move out of a really bad place without facing additional fees?

Hello,

I would like to ask if there is any chance to successfully resolve the very uncomfortable situation I am currently dealing with.

It is as follows:
I moved into a place that turned out to be a nightmare. It has apparently received the least amount of maintenance possible; a lot of its equipment is very old, damaged, dirty, or broken. I was willing to tolerate that. I generally just need a decent place to stay; I have no need for luxury, so it did not bother me very much. But the main issue is the air quality in the apartment. After just one night, I woke up with bad respiratory issues, a runny nose, and watery eyes. That had never happened to me before. It stayed with me until I went on a short trip and stayed at a different place. All these symptoms disappeared. Then I came back, and they immediately returned.

The host, respectively a real estate agent responsible for this property, tries to be professional and offers to address these issues, but they shouldn't be there in the first place. They even admitted that they were aware of several of the problems with the equipment I listed. Why am I then burdened by having to deal with them? They might feel how nice people they are that they suddenly want to replace something broken after my request, but if they were really nice, those problems wouldn't even be there before I moved in.

Therefore, I asked them to terminate my rent because I just wanted to leave this hellhole. They agreed, but they still insist I stick to the cancellation policy and pay them the next thirty days after the cancellation date. Which sounds very arrogant to me. When I asked the Airbnb support, they were absolutely of no help and wanted me to pay that cancellation fee, too. I get that they have their percentage from it, so it makes total sense. I just feel like I am getting scammed here.

I have absolutely no issue paying for what I've been using, even though it is a very below-average experience, but I still believe it is fair. What does not seem fair to me is to subsidize this faulty business because I am leaving it due to issues not caused by me.

Is there any way this situation can be successfully resolved, or am I supposed to fund the host and Airbnb? The whole situation and experience makes me very sad, I had zero issues with Airbnb before that for many years.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Hi there @Marek123,

I'm really sorry to hear of your recent experience. Have you been to Airbnb Support Team again since this happens and shared your review of the uncleanliness and health concerns? If not, I highly recommend sharing that information with them.
