How to handle long term horribly messy guest

I have been hosting for a few years now

my beautiful space has really been enjoyed and appreciated by many

the most recent long term guest has the place looking like bachelor pad/ dorm room disgustingly filthy. I have gone in a few times and cleaned up. It goes right back to huge mess anyway. He has left garbage, spoiled food in pots etc. Any ideas?

Hi there @Kitty39, I'm sorry to hear that your lovely place was left behind like that. Has the guest already checked out?

Sorry to hear about that. I noticed that you don't have much in the way of house rules. I understand why you would want to keep them brief, but my rules include that guests are required to tidy up after themselves, with a short description of what that means. I also do an in-person tour on check in, where I go into a bit more detail about my expectations on cleanliness. This is especially important with long term guests. If they are not following those instructions, they will get a polite and friendly reminder about it.

Have you tried speaking to your current guest yet about the condition of the listing? If so, how did he respond?

Thank you for the great suggestions and for letting me know my rules are not adequate for the current fella who is a very young engineer who works constantly. He is very quiet and polite so I hated to come down hard on him! But I’m not his mother🤣 He is leaving soon so it’s too late to change up the rules now. You have helped me to see what I need to do for future guests. I will let him know that he must leave it as he found it.
