I received a message from the host asking to share my driver's license and said that airbnb doesn't allow check in without verification. Is this true?

No it's a 100% not true. However if the host says on the listing it's a condition of booking on the listing usually in the house rules, that you provide them with photo ID then you need to provide it if you want to stay with them.
In addition in some countries hosts have to collect photo ID.
@Kudrat0 No it is not true. However hosts are allowed to check the person booking is the person staying - How they do this is unclear
