Partial Refund

Partial Refund

Hey guys, I have a confusing one.

I recently cancelled a stay at a property after the free cancellation period but well within the 50% refund period. I partially paid the stay and paid $848, and scheduled to pay at a later date a remaining $670. I requested a full refund from the host to which they declined. There’s all this conflicting information on airbnb, for instance, when i cancelled, on the air bnb app it said i will be refunded the full $848? But enquiring further i discovered that i am actually receiving less than 50% of the total booking amount which works out to be around $1500 in total. Air bnb has stated that the host has a strict cancellation policy, but regardless, why all this mis information, and do i have grounds to push this further and receive my partial refund.

Without knowing your dates of travel difficult to comment @Patrick3670

However when you went to cancel it would have clearly shown you what the cancellation fee was and whether you would be refunded anything.

if as you say you only paid 50 % of the cost and you cancelled with a host that has a strict cancellation policy you are probably not entitled to a refund .

look at it this way as an example

total cost = 100

deposit paid = 50

balance due - 50

you will not be charged the balance due as you cancelled.

if you had paid in full you would have been entitled to to a 50% refund . You didn't so no refund due 😀

Hello @Patrick3670

Did you cancel within the 48 hour window?  It's very much a question of when you tried to cancel and how long before your trip was due to start. Here is how the Strict cancellation policy is explained from the host side:

  • Strict
    • To receive a full refund, guests must cancel within 48 hours of booking, and the cancellation must occur at least 14 days before check-in
    • If they cancel 14 or more days before check-in but not within 48 hours of booking, you’ll be paid 50% for all nights
    • If they cancel between 7 and 14 days before check-in, you’ll be paid 50% for all nights
    • If they cancel after that, you’ll be paid 100% for all nights

Airbnb also may keep their commission.  Any cleaning fees though are refunded to the guest.  You would need to check whether local taxes are refunded.  So the initial total amount may vary if you take into account these variables
