Reluctant to host disrespectful people

Reluctant to host disrespectful people

Hi, i just came across a bunch of hosts comments and issues and i would like to say that i feel do heard off and relieved seeing such issues. Not because i am a sadist 😅, but because i go through one or another such issues on daily basis. I would like to share one such and incident with you all and would like to know whether i was correct or not .

One of the major setbacks i have as a host i feel is i am extremely intolerant towards disrespect. In some cases i hear people around me saying i am too much , but i would like to know a fellow host's opinion about this.

I had to cancel a reservation recently , of a guest. They were a married couple , going to stay at my place for a couple of days. They asked me whether they can check in at a particular time which is way after my standard check in time. I was ok with it since my property has a self check in system. On the day of check in, at 10:45am , i added him to a watsapp group ,  which had my team in it. As already informed earlier , i needed there government IDs (soft copies) , as per the local laws , without which i was not allowed to provide the password to my property's lock. I kept on calling them texting them about this till it was 4pm in the evening. My phone's battery was about to die and i have no co-host either. It was a sunday and i was in a tricky situation and once my phone's battery dies and  just in case they arrive the location before i could get hold of a charger , they will be stuck. I kept on explaining this to them , but got no response rather the wife of the couple started behaving rudely saying they will not give the IDs till they reach the location. And finally at 2% battery left on my phone , i had to cancel the booking. Soon after i got to charge my phone , but i was extremely reluctant to host them at all. Because if they could not respect my rules, my situation even before check in , what would they do once they enter the space. And what kind of a review will they post.

I lost a huge booking amount. At first i was having second thoughts about the whole , situation. But later i felt i did the right thing. Though they did deserved the wandering and hassle because they did give me an earful saying i am a bad host and i deserve to host **bleep**ty guests and my place is overhyped. Now that i think about it , i did dodge a bullet.

I just wanted to know from my fellow hosts , what do they think about this scenario.

Hosting is difficult job especially when the ethics don't match , but i feel this is the difference between being a host , and being an hotel owner. We are not obliged to host guests that we are not comfortable with , we are allowed to judge them and we are allowed the right to reject them as well.

You are wrong! You didn’t allow them the opportunity to present the IDs upon arrival. Did your listing specifically state they need to provide IDs beforehand? It is a lot of scamming going on so I can understand their hesitation & wanted to present the IDs while present if the listing didn’t require it beforehand. I think they dodged a bullet honestly I would stay away from problematic host like you

@DeLona0  unlike in the US It's the law that you need to collect ID before someone stays in India and you need to check that couples are married

As Sohini already said on his post he couldn't collect ID on arrival as it was self check in.

@Sohini3 if you want to run a short term rental business then you need to make sure you're accessible by phone particularly on your check in day - why would you not make sure you have a phone charger/cohost

I can't imagine it was a huge amount for you to lose for a two day booking which in any case you lost because you chose to cancel the booking /you didn't want to host them.

learn from this and make it clearer on your listing that it's a legal requirement to collect photo ID and that you need to do this on booking or make sure you only allow checking where you meet the guest on arrival.

this would have avoided this situation.
