Strange Account Inquiries

Strange Account Inquiries

Hello. I am new to hosting on AIRBNB. I have a rather large inquiry for a 50 day stay. It is in a summer lake kind of area and the inquiry is during the winter season. The inquiry is coming from an account that was created this month. Im curious to know, how to protect myself and property from common scams. I have no issue accepting requests from long time AirBnb accounts, but new accounts are a bit suspect. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Great call @Aaron1450

Scammers tend to target new hosts.

Unless there's a minimum stay regulation in your area, you don't want to start off with a 50-day booking anyway (scam or no scam)!

Take some manageable short bookings to ease you into things and to get some reviews up.

Hello @Aaron1450

Unfortunately this is a right of passage on Airbnb and we have all been through this and you're correct in assuming that this is very likely coming from a scammer who may very well ask you to contact them off platform or even ask you to send them a video in the next message.

As a newbie, accepting a long term reservation is not the best way to start as you need to get as many excellent reviews as quickly as possible to appear in guest searches.  You could limit your max stay count to stop these long term stays until you are established?  Winter months = potentially heavy heating bills according to where you are.  Look in the Host Guides section for the pros and cons of accepting long term stays on Airbnb Aaron.

The only way to know if a person is genuine is to communicate with them and ask them enough questions so that you feel comfortable accepting their reservation.  This came through as an enquiry so you don't have to do anything but reply to them asap and you have done your job.  If you want to learn more about the difference between an enquiry and a trip request and the actions required, read the Host guide below:

You are able to flag any guests who violate Airbnb's policies by clicking on the three dots in the message dialogue or by using the flag symbol to alert Airbnb.

Good luck!
