How do you ask your guests to keep utensils/dishes clean?

Hi everyone,

IMG_9796.jpeg

I’m wondering how to handle utensils and dishes after guests has check-out!!

I’d love to hear your experiences on this.

Do you:

  • Charge a cleaning fee that covers it?

  • Mention it clearly in your additional house rules?

  • Keep a board or small note in the kitchen reminding guests that they are responsible for cleaning up after themselves?

  • Or have you found some other idea that works better?

I’d really appreciate suggestions on what has worked for you without making guests feel uncomfortable.

Thanks in advance!

Amazing tips @David13337 😍

Do you have any favourite cleaning products or tools (besides your vacuum) that you’d recommend fellow hosts? What are your top picks?

Hi @Bhumika. I try to run the airbnb with sustainable products so that I usually choose plant based products. I do not have yet a list of favorite products though as I am still testing a few of them. Any suggestion of must-have cleaning products from other hosts? For tools I really like ostrich feather duster, no-scratch sponges and then I have a standard mop and bucket. I use a Kirby tool for vacuuming. In the kit

That's pretty detail oriented of you @David13337 ! I have always been on a look out for tips to help with dusty corners and it becomes difficult to treat them or make them dust-free if left as it is for a long time. I'll try your tip of using sanitizing wipes and sprays on those areas.

Have you developed any special checklists that help you stay on top of all these details during your cleaning sessions?

I do not have a checklist per se @Bhumika. However I keep all the airbnb supplies in one cabinet so that I can easily track what is running low and what can still wait before the next purchase. I buy most of the cleaning supplies in bulk.

That makes sense @David13337 👏 I personally buy my home cleaning supplies from Costco, Dollarama and Home sense, given discounts and efficient pricing when buying in bulk or a single item. So cost efficient.

I know you were looking if other hosts have more suggestions on must-have cleaning supplies. Why don't you start a new conversation for the same with other hosts? I am sure you'll get amazing ideas through the community 😉

Exactly, I do the same, and I even fumigate because there could often be unpleasant bugs.

I have a Checkout list as well. They are asked to load the dishwasher and run it . Some choose to do the dishes by hand if there are only a few items. We ask them to strip the bed sheets and pillow cases. I take the duvet cover off myself each time guest leave.  Wash everything in hot water and dry on high heat.

Amazing tips @Emily2098 ! Do you get feedback or suggestions from guests about the checkout process, that’s helped you refine it over time?

No, no one has mentioned anything or complained about it.. it’s been  good so far for 3 years .

That's great @Emily2098 😍 Do you have more such unique ideas and tips that you think might help other hosts?

I'd love to hear more!

For the comfort of all our guests, we kindly ask that used utensils and dishes be cleaned after use

Hi @Duminda2 , do you have specific strategies or messaging that have worked well for encouraging guests to follow this guideline?

For example, like host @Frances6094 , do you include this request in your house rules or check out instructions?

Hi!

The house rules state to load all used dishes in the dishwasher before checking out.  It is also reminded in the check out procedures.

Hi @Frances6094 ,  this is great!

Have you noticed whether guests generally comply with this rule, or do you sometimes need to remind them directly?

I have it in my packet of information that I send to guest and also explain that there will be a xtra cleaning fee from the deposit if not done.  However, I do speak to every guest via the phone prior to coming and I do alot of xtra steps to inform and make sure they get to know me...I am Not a fan of only communicating via the app, My guest know me before check in and usually feel like they should do the extra steps for me - because I do for them...
