Hello, I have a heating situation. How can I effectively address this situation where an Airbnb guest staying upstairs turns off the heat, causing my basement living space to become uncomfortably cold, especially since the thermostat controls both areas? What proactive steps can I take to prevent this issue and ensure a comfortable temperature for both myself and the guest?

The only solution I see her is the obvious one, install a separate thermostat or heating system for the basement. 

It will be uncomfortable for the guests if you tried to control the guest's staying area temperature in any way.

You can try using electric blanket, space heater, heated mattress, etc.

This is my opinion. I am waiting for others opinions also

Unfortunately installing a separate heating system in the basement will cost me $20,000 USD.

@Shem62 you can buy locked boxes that cover thermostats/heating controls. However you really need a remotely accessible thermostat to enable you to be in control of the heating before you lock the controls away.

I use lock boxes and haven't had an issue.  I think only once somonis was hot and I adjusted a couple degrees, supplied a fan and reminded windows do open.  No problem.

Actually that’s not the only solution.  You can do what is called a zone system. Then you have a thermostat on each level that can control your temperature upstairs and downstairs

too bad, you don’t live in Utah or we would be happy to come and help you with this issue. We have ran into it quite often what you can do is you can zone the system that way the upstairs and the downstairs have their own thermostat to control the heat

@Shem62 Did you decide if you will get either a smart thermostat, a lockbox, or try to zone the system? It would be very useful to know how you find it and if you need any more help with whatever solution you choose. 🙂
