Tourism Levy and GST

Tourism Levy and GST

Hello Alberta Hosts -

Can someone confirm if property use taxes are referring to GST, and if occupancy taxes are referring to the tourism levy in Alberta?

BC Hosts -

What is included in the occunpancy taxes line that AirBnB submits?

Thanks so much.

Did you find an answer to your question?

If not, it might be helpful to connect with hosts in your area through our Local Host Clubs.

I'm also tagging hosts from Alberta to see if they can help: @Dave-and-Deb0@Bryan594@Meda42@Wade62@Pam2429 and @Glen-and-Natalie0.

@⁨Danielle---Kerry--And-The-Kids-⁩0  Just wanted to clarify some common tax terms we see on our Airbnb earnings breakdown:

Alberta Hosts:

Property Use Taxes = GST (Goods and Services Tax)
This is the 5% federal tax that applies to rental income if you earn more than $30,000 annually. You may need to register for a GST number and remit it yourself if Airbnb doesn’t handle it for you.

Occupancy Taxes = Tourism Levy
Airbnb automatically collects and remits Alberta’s tourism levy on your behalf, so you don’t need to take additional steps unless you list on other platforms.

These taxes are usually collected and remitted directly by Airbnb if your listing qualifies.

Hope that helps clear things up!
