Tourism Levy and GST

Tourism Levy and GST

Hello Alberta Hosts -

Can someone confirm if property use taxes are referring to GST, and if occupancy taxes are referring to the tourism levy in Alberta?

BC Hosts -

What is included in the occunpancy taxes line that AirBnB submits?

Thanks so much.

I'm also tagging hosts from Alberta to see if they can help: @Dave-and-Deb0@Bryan594@Meda42@Wade62@Pam2429 and @Glen-and-Natalie0.

@⁨Danielle---Kerry--And-The-Kids-⁩0  Just wanted to clarify some common tax terms we see on our Airbnb earnings breakdown:

Alberta Hosts:

Property Use Taxes = GST (Goods and Services Tax)
This is the 5% federal tax that applies to rental income if you earn more than $30,000 annually. You may need to register for a GST number and remit it yourself if Airbnb doesn’t handle it for you.

Occupancy Taxes = Tourism Levy
Airbnb automatically collects and remits Alberta’s tourism levy on your behalf, so you don’t need to take additional steps unless you list on other platforms.

These taxes are usually collected and remitted directly by Airbnb if your listing qualifies.

Hope that helps clear things up!

Hi fellow hosts, @Dave-and-Deb0 @Bryan594 @Meda42 @Wade62 @Pam2429 @Glen-and-Natalie0!

I hope you can help.

I noticed that Airbnb now collects the Tourism Levy on our behalf. Should I go ahead and remove the "Tourist Tax" I had previously set up under Custom Tax Collection?

Also, my listings are GST-registered, so I’ve included the 5% GST under Custom Tax Collection along with our registration number. Just to confirm—should I leave that as is, even if Airbnb indicates that they automatically collect this tax?

Hi @Brise12

I answered you one the other thread where you asked this.

Yes, you should remove the Tourist Tax as Airbnb is charging this now to the guest and remittng it to the Alberta government.  If you do not remove it, the guest will be paying this twice.

As for the GST, yes, keep it added and as long as you have your GST number entered in, Airbnb will not charge this and you will receive it from Airbnb for you to remit to CRA.

I hope this helps!

I don't collect any taxes, Airbnb collect and remit.

Thanks .
