Just found out that beginning JUNE 1st 2023 on Long Island, in Suffolk County NY USA, the Townships and counties have begun charging a 5.5% short term occupancy tax on rentals less than 30 days on ALL RENTALS Within the county. I have 1 link I will post here, the only article my accountant could find. There is no information on this, No News anywhere. Our elected officials have no info on how Airbnb hosts can make sure they are following the law.
I just added my tax info & used my SSN for both tax ID number requests to have ABB charge and collect 5.5% room tax on anyone who reserves 29 days or less. I also wrote to the few short term guests I have had the pleasure of knowing & asked them to voluntarily send me the tax due on the amount I received. not the amount they paid. I hope I did this right and I hope my guests all send me the tax.. I did not do an official "request money" yet. I asked voluntarily hoping that those few will "send money" to me thru the the ABB site. They were all such wonder human beings.
Does anyone else collect this new tax yet? The only link found was sent to me by my accountant & is attached here. and is attached.

Hello! I am curious as to if you have any new information pertaining to the collection of the Suffolk County tax? I logged onto my hosting page, went to Edit Preferences, down to Tax... It says "Your listing is in Southampton where Airbnb may collect and remit occupancy taxes on your behalf."
I tried to book my property on another account and the itemized bill does not include 5.5% occupancy tax. I know this is how it shows up because I have paid that tax when traveling. I called Airbnb, and they said they were collecting it and if I had any questions to contact the tax authority... but Airbnb is the intermediary so I would figure they should be able to tell me what they are or are not doing.
I appreciate any insights anyone might have : )
I believe they have separated the occupancy tax on short terms and its now easier to figure out what the tax is as its a separate deposit into ur account as payment of occupancy tax. In 2023, they did NOT sperate it, so it was alot of math and calculations to figure what tax was due..
Hey @Candysue0 ,
I'm a host (not in LI) but will be staying at an Airbnb in East Hampton and the hosts are saying I need to pay a separate amount of 5.5% when I arrive there. Now when I look on my receipt for the rental it says that airbnb already paid the Suffolk County tax, but the host is saying that's not true and I still need to pay it. Airbnb also confirmed via a separate thread to me that the 5.5% is already collected on behalf of the county. Is there something I'm missing? Which side is not correct, it wouldn't surprise me if Airbnb wasn't.
Thanks
