Air BNB host is going to charge me for broken fridge door

Hi

im currently on night 2 of a 3 night stay in Istanbul. I opened the fridge door and it came off. The bottom hinge was in 3-6 pieces.

i messaged the host immediately and was told I must pay for the damage and they are sending someone to fix it tomorrow.

I dont know what to do! All I did was open a fridge door in a normal manner.

The fridge is from 2014 according to the label in the fridge but the host is claiming it brand new.

Do I find somewhere else to stay got tomorrow night? It’s quite intimidating.

@Luke237 the host cannot make you pay-- they will have to submit a request for payment through Airbnb's resolution center, then if you decline they can ask Airbnb to intervene. It seems that usually AIrbnb sides with guests in these matters. In your shoes I would take photos of the fridge and hinge to support your case. As for whether to find another place to stay, that's really up to you. If you decide to do that, you can open a counter-claim against the host for a refund of your unused rent. If you stay, you're unlikely to get any kind of refund.
