How do I stop airbnb from submitting taxes on my behalf? This is not a benefit that I want to participate in because we do other business with the state and it is throwing up red flags. Please provide instructions on how to opt-out of submitting taxes.

@Amy300, did you get a request from ABB to submit your tax info to them? If you got the request, and havent submitted it they will withhold 28% of your income for submission to IRS. Generally this kicks in with having earned $20k/yr AND 200+ stays.

If this is not the case and you are talking about state or local taxes, ABB has agreements with many locales for occupancy taxes and you cannot stop them.

I have yet to see a FAQ on how to find info in your area. For instance, I am in Santa Rosa, CA county of Sonoma. ABB collects 12% for Sonoma county except for residents w/in Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa has it's own 12% occupancy tax which ABB's FAQ suggests you should add to each reservation OR collect in person (odd, since I was told never to accept ANY payments in person for ANY special requests). I am looking into this more before my first booking.
I am trying to understand how Airbnb is coming up with the amount of tax they are collecting on my behalf. The amount recorded by them doesn't add up to the calculation I get. I reached out to the support team, but was told they can't provide tax advice. I don't want advice, just an explanation with an example of the exact number breakdown. This would apply to Airbnb in Columbus, Indiana if anyone can provide a breakdown I would really appreciate the help.
@Jennifer1980 That Air BNB is collecting and remitting occupancy tax is based on an agreement between Air BNB and whichever taxing entity - city, county and/or state, not an agreement with you as a host. Unfortunately, these taxing entities are willing to accept lump sum remittance from Air BNB, that is, the payment is not accompanied by any individual host information. Therefore, no one knows if the tax is accurate or not. My city participated in the Air BNB tax collection/remittance process for a few months, but realized that Air BNB refused to provide individual host information and therefore the tax payments could not be audited. As a host I feel it is my responsibility to ensure the appropriate amount of City occupancy tax is remitted. Therefore I am not a fan of Air BNB process. However, I think many taxing entities are just happy to get the money.
I wondered the same thing. I did the math on one of the reservations and it appeared that they took 7% Indiana tax and 5% county innkeepers fee from the TOTAL listing price; that is, the amount the guest pays. Before airbnb started taking the tax out, I paid 12% of the amount I netted. In July I lowered my price 12% to account for the tax, but the end result that I netted slightly less than I had before, and the guest paid slightly more. Doesn't seem right.
I host in Massachusetts. I was paying on MassConnect tax site all the occupancy taxes after downloading the income statement from airbnb app. Last week I came to know that there is another tab in AirBNB listing section about "gross earnings". This tab shows occupancy tax collected by airbnb and then paid to taxing state authorities. Good and bad! There wasnt enough communication on this to me as a host, I could have avoided paying double taxes.
Now I dont know how to claim refund on the occupancy tax I paid to Mass Connect. If anyone know it, please respond here.
I, too, am having difficulties figuring out where all the tax money they collected last year actually went. It did not go to my EIN number. I'm going to definitely report them to BBB and hire an attorney to look into this as I think ABB is charging us and putting the money in their account instead of with the STATE of GA that they claim they have an agreement with. Definitely going to look into this and find a solution one way or the other. There are other companies out there that have the same platform for people to find STVR besides ABB!
Howdy neighbor, In SC hosts who live on site are not obliged to pay the state and county taxes, but airbnb still takes them from guests. Is that tax fraud?
