Attempted resolution with airbn host

I made a reservation for a two night stay with a local host.  He books the lower level of his A-frame style home (seperate entrance & parking) and then the main level (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom etc.) and upper master bedroom and bath.

Check-in was to be between 8pm - 10pm.  He checked in with us re arrival time and we said 8:30 pm - he was happy with that as he had more cleaning to do.

We arrived and the house had a VERY strong odor.  I am unsure if it was a cleaning product or something that was smoked in the house.  It was a very unpleasant smell as though garbage had been burnt in a fireplace.  Main floor where we were had a gas fireplace - I do not know what is on the lower level.  Odor strong enough to cause a headache.  Kitchen area had dishes out in a counter top drainer, a dirty sponge, a half empty bottloe of wine on the counter and a prescription drug container.  All areas of the home were very cluttered, floors were swept in the middle but the outer edges were dusty, kids stuff everywhere.  Host gave a heads up that he was working on wallpaper in the bathroom we were to use, but that was not the case - bathroom was clearly in the midst of a remodel.  Bed was made, however extra pillow was on the unclean floor next to the bed.  I just not feel comfortable to sleep in the bed.  Stuff was on the nightstand. Bathroom wall had just the drywall up - nothing else.  We walked down the hall of the main floor and looked in a room where the door was open - it was a pit.  We left after being there 20 mins.  - about 9:15 pm.   The next morning at around 9:15 am I cancelled the next nights reservation and requested a refund.  Host responded that we should have contacted him that night and he will not consider any refund told me to take it to Airbnb Resolutions.  Said it is a shared house and he is not responsible to areas clean other than the private room we would sleep in.   The posting noted that "other people" were in the seperate lower unit and not on the main level where we were.   I have suggested I'm willing to pay for the first night even though we left after 20 mins, but would like a refund for the second night.  I have not had a response in the last 36 hours.  Any suggestions for me as I proceed to file my complaint with the Airbnb resolution department?  Is it correct I cannot complete a review if my stay was not completed?
