This reservation was cancelled by me. The calendar will not let me remove it and it shows as not available for booking.
There is no legend on the persons name to remove just an unremovable, cancelled yet appearingly reserved on the calendar.

A cancellation also blocked the corresponding dates on my calendar. I don't know if you can remove it, maybe you have to ask Airbnb staff to remove it for you (by explaining the situation). Go to the Help Center and eventually you will find a way to send them an email.
Now if you have a request from someone else who would like to stay in your place during this period, you could suggest to this guest to book for the time which is shown as available and just sort it out with him individually. Sometimes it is easier to sort things out with an actual guest than to try to sort things out via the Airbnb website.
Airbnb has a lot of pre-coded procedures, but it cannot have a pre-coded way to deal with all possible situations. The real life is to complex to be fully pre-coded, and any attempt to do so would make the web site so full of options that most people would never find the option corresponding to their personal situation.

Please don't suggest other hosts come to a direct arrangement - it's against BnB rules - hosts won't be able to use BnB's host guarantee if there is damage to the property and if there is a problem with a guest BnB won't be able to help.
Of course hosts, can use lots of ways to fill their property - but it's important for a host to understand if they go outside BnB they won't have guaranteed payment for their booking and if things go wrong - they are on their own.

Thanks so much for your post. As airbnb is expanding and there are more and more Hosts, plus a huge amount of first time Guests, I have found that I have had too many Guests say to me....."But, the last Host let us/me do this." You are exactly right about not going around the airbnb platform as it does nothing but set up both the Host and the Guest for major problems with regards to abuse, fraud, damages, voiding the airbnb contractual agreement as well as starting a sub-culture of Hosts and Guests that come to expect that the rules can be broken "for them." We already have a big enough problem with the culture of entitlement and entitled, high maintenance Guests are usually the most problematic, no sense in giving them more permission to be more so. So thanks again as I know this can be a touchy subject with a lot of well meaning Hosts until they have been burned a few times by Guests that you can't please no matter what you do.
That is one of the penalities for cancelling as a host. It is not removeable.

Surely Airbnb staff can make the corresponding calendar dates available again. Someone's bound to be root on that server :).
