I recently had to make a claim regarding a guest using charcoal in a propane BBQ. The guest went out and purchased the charcoal them self and then added it to the BBQ. In doing this it damaged the BBQ.
I made the claim to airbnb and they said because I did not give instructions on how to use the item, it was not the guest fault.
My question now is how far do I have to go with instructions with regards to items in my house ? Should I be leaving instruction on ever item in the house ?
Ie: do not microwave metal item?
Or should those be considered "common" knowledge.
This is rather worrying .

Just add it to your house rules for the future, but if the guests are already out the door... Not much you can do 😞
Ya that's what I'm going to do, just wonder how far I should go with rules about everything.
I feel airbnb should supply generic rules that you can add to your listing for everyday items.
How ridiculous! Not having a damage deposit with Airbnb worries me 😞 I just listed with them.
I do have a set $300 damage deposite set but Airbnb is in control if I can have it or not
Wow I'm going through the same issue.My last guest turned my thermostat all the way down to the lowest degrees and now my thermostat isn't working, this same guest lost my keys.
Now i state the lost key fee in house rules and ask guests to please not touch the thermostat
THIS is exactly why we don't let people cook in our home. There are too many stupid people that there is not enough paper in the world to explain how to use each pot, knife, or piece of expensive electronic gear to make it crystal clear how it should be used. I recall some other host(s) wondering how to deal with a guest using a water kettle to boil eggs, what to do about ruined pots, how to repair a carpet with an iron burn, how to unclog a garbage disposal full of celery strings.... the list goes on. Now to add charcoal added to a gas grill... stupid people. So sorry this has happened to you and am especially sorry that Airbnb didn't do the right thing and cover the cost of damages to your grill.
