Damages

Hi,

I had a family stay who cancelled early saying they were worried about their 3 young children distroying my property. As part of my deal I offer my Guests full use of the Lounge Room, straight after they left I discovered my Flat Screen T.V. no longer worker, my guitar was damaged, a painting, a door etc

Whilst they were here their children jumped on furniture, pushed the T.V. around on it's stand, pressed buttons etc worse than that the parents kept letting their children play out the front where I'd requested they put them in the fenced in back yard where they'd be Safe as out front is a Very Busy Road and I class it as a Dangerous zone for children.

I've been trying to communicate with them and they will Not own up to the Damages done.

For me it's simple, all the items Damaged Worked on their arrival, they were the Only ones using the Area. On their Departure they No longer worked.

Does anyone have any sugestions, I've discovered my home contents insurance does not cover for this.

Cheers Tracey

Do you require guests to leave a security deposit when booking through Airbnb?  If so, you can charge against that. If not, go to the Resolution Center to request a reasonable amount to cover the damage and engage Airbnb if the guests do not respond through the proper channels.

@Tracey16,

Hi Tracey, sorry to hear you had a bad experience, no doubt it was also a learning curve for the parents who have discovered that it may be better if they choose different accommodation in future untill their children are more settled in their behaviour

When creating my listing, I remember Airbnb advised not to have items in guest areas which I would be very distresed about if damage occurred, so I knew to move the family heirlooms. But not everything can be removed.... This is where we need good matches with guests and it's still ok to be an adult only venue.  That can help a bit.

Regarding home insurance, it's for residential use by homeowners and residents. If you are using part of your home for commercial purposes, then you may need to upgrade your policy.

It's easier just to screen your guests, and review what property and spaces are available. Reading your story and another about burnt benches, reminds me of why I don't have kitchen areas available and the tellies are $200 dollar models.

Sorry about the expensive learning curve. It hurts.

Sincere regards, Christine.
