Double Price of Airbnb Room vs Booking using a well known Hotel site

Dear All,

We recently went on holiday to Mexico,  we booked a room through Airbnb on the island of isla mujeres for 4 nights,   upon arrival at the booked place we noted it was in fact a hotel, which was not lised in the listing.   Anyway,  just out of interested I looked at this hotel on google and I was quite shocked to note,  that we could have booked the same room( same pictures as airbnb using 1 of 3 google suggested major hotel booking sites) for half the price for the 4 nights stay that we paid using Airbnb...

I was of course really upset and I mean double the price for 4 nights stay... Pretty bad and extra cost was high.

I wrote to Airbnb straight away and they kindly offered us a voucher that covered about 30% of the double the price we paid... Still I feel a little upset by this and when we returned to Europe,  I got in touch with the dear man who was the host to ask what was going on and offer him the chance to confess for his actions (wishful thinking) ,   he started to get quite angry and rude with me,  I did offer him the chance to do the decent thing and at least offer us some money back....

The interesting part also,  was that during the check out on the last day,   the host was not in sight and a  Hotel worker checked us out,   he asked myself and my partner " How much is the host charging you ? "     makes me suspsect the host is subletting the rooms from the hotel and making money out of Airbnb customers....  That is my theory anyway.

I did want to ask if there was any further action I could take?  I apprciate that Airbnb do not set the prices,   but the listing did not mention the "hotel name"  if it had been listed,  I would have compared prices prior to booking.

The other thing was,  this hotel was not really up to the double pricing structure also in terms of quality,  it was more like a 2 star hotel,  not a 4 star price as we were charged....

Any advice greatly appreciated and sorry for the rant above,  still a little upset  :  )

Many thanks

Olly

Hi @Oliver83

It's up to you to research prices and acommodation before you book whatever platform you use.

Airbnb has already provided you with a voucher for 30% of the cost....what more do you want?

I presumed you left a review detailing your experience and flag the hosts profile.

If you felt the listing wasn't in line with the description you could have asked Airbnb to cancel the booking. But you didn't do this, you stayed for the duration.

Hi Helen,

If the hotel name or a mention of it being a hotel had been in the listing I would have researched it... Hence why I reviewed it as soon as I had a chance...

I have been using hotel booking sites for many years...

we did consider canceling the booking, but we did not feel completely safe in this location, so did not want to run the risk of being stuck on the streets with no place to stay...

So you got arbitraged by someone who was buying of a good value hotel. Big deal. That's what travel agents do, airlines agents, tour operators, property managers... hell, airbnb is arbitraging prices between what we hosts are willing to rent for and prices travellers are willing to pay! Chances are if you hadn't booked through Airbnb you wouldn't even have found the hotel in the first place. I don't understand what's your problem, really...
