Guest asking for proof of address

I have some guests arriving in a couple of weeks and are staying for a month.  They have asked for me to provide something that proves they will be resident in the house in order to use it as evidence they are living there so their Children can go to school in the area.

Has anyone done this before? It's a hassle to put council tax in their name etc... is there another solution?

Thanks in advance

Is this a long term reservation - ie: where you have a tenancy agreement in place? If so, then can use that.

If it is short term and they are asking you to prove that they are resident in the area, just to get their kids into a particular school, then  steer clear.

It may not be illegal, but claiming residency in an area (but really only staying for a month) just to get your child into a good school is frowned on. Just explain that you cannot provide proof of residency in the area - they have the AirBnB booking email - but I'll bet they want something that implies they live locally

Many thanks Gerry and Rashid.

No, it is'nt a long term reservation, they don't have a tenancy agreement.

I think really all I can do is suggest they provide the airbnb booking details as suggested.

Many thanks for the much needed clarity!

@Kit29,

Normally guest are not allowed using the address of the place they are staying for official purposes. (opening bank-account, delivery of mail and goods, official registrations for work, school etc..)

They are not tennants. However i sometimes host international students (coming from outside the EU)  which are obliged to have an address, because of the permit they need to study or work in my country.

Then i write something on paper wich they can use for THAT purpose only. If people come from within the EU and their stay is shorter then 4 months, they do NOT need to registrate. The Airbnb reservation will do the job to proof they are staying somewhere temporary. I think for the childrens school it will be enough proof too ?

Best regards,

Emiel

The problem in the UK is children are allocated schools on residency within a certain distance. There are very good schools which parents go out of their way to get their kids into - including pretending that they live very local to the school. This sounds like an attempt to break the schools conditions on residency.

@Gerry-And-Rashid0Either that, or maybe more likely, they intend to claim they are tenants of the unit, which will I assume, allow them to stay on until they can be evicted, and they would use as proof of their tenancy that 'see, the landlord even gave us documentation for the children's school'.  Of course it could all be innocent, but changing your children's school for ONE month is very strange according to me.  LOL.

@Gerry-And-Rashid0,

Ok, thanks for explaining, then indeed @Kit29 should not cooperate on this, making her even  "a partner in crime" :>)

Many thanks Emiel - really helpful.

At this point that is what I have suggested. At a push I could write a letter but stipulating the duration of their stay at the house.

I wouldn't touch these guests with a bargepole. Very iffy.

I'd be very very careful here, staying for a month but they are putting their children in the local school?  Unless they are there with the stated purpose of looking for their own apartment or house, I would suspect a potential scam.

They're from Finland, and I've had a search and the story checks out - in that I've done a bit of googling and one of them is a University researcher and she is here to work at the local University.....?
