Guest left door open

hello everyone!

I am enquiringly on behalf of my parents who are also hosting through Air BNB.

They had guests staying last night who had bikes and allowed them to use the garage to store the bikes overnight. The guests chained their bikes together and then left the garage wide open, which resulted in my dad's (quite expensive) bike getting stolen.

Obviously they chose to let the guests have access, but under the same house rules and security conditions of the house and show how to lock it.

Does anyone think they have ground for AIR BNB compensation?

Any advice would be appreciated.

@Laura366, what an unfortunate situation.

If it stated clearly in the house rules that the garage must be locked after bikes are stored, your parents may have a case.

If they charge a security deposit, perhaps a claim could be made (or an agreement about compensation from the guests via the resolution center).

Your parents should contact ABB immediately.

As I read it, no, but no harm in asking.

Make sure he also contacts his own insurer.

Unfortunately you probably don't have a valid claim.

It's also up to the owners to ensure that their property is correctly secured, particularly when they have guests staying. Trusting guests to always do the right thing and lock every window, door, etc is not realistic - as much as we might want it to be.

A garage, where guests are storing bikes and where other expensive items are kept...there would be an expectation that the home owner would check to ensure it was locked correctly when leaving the property, etc.
