Host asking for passport copies

My host via the chat the function has requested actual copies of my passport to book there apartment in Russia. I understand some additional information might be needed to file with certain Governments but an actual copy of my passport seems a little excessive.

In Russia, from what I know, there are visa requirements, @Justin267. Maybe a copy is the easiest. If you don't feel comfortable, provide the host with the passport number, valid through date and all the details. And also check online what exactly IS required in Russia.

In my country (Russia's neighbour) it is illegal to copy a document (theoretically), but even if you wat to set up a bank online you'll have to copy your ID and send them.

There isn't any statutory need for a Russian host to have a copy of your passport in advance of your arrival.

Sometimes I am asked to assist with visa registration - this is only required for longer stays (or during fifa world cup), then to complete the application I would need a copy of a guests visa, passport and landing card but only upon their arrival.

Sometimes I am asked to assist with invitation letters - passport information is a resquisite for this but a passport copy isn't required.

As a host, I do request a digital copy of my guest´s national ID. Mainly it is for insurance purpose and "between us" also security. I wouldnt like to look like a fool if in the case something happened inside my home and the police needed to be involved for me not to know/be able to identify my current guests.

Nevertheless, as a house rule, it is clearly stipulated in my listing. So guests know what to expect.

Ask you host why would they need that information for.

Hey guys, I booked a place for an apartment in Madrid. I've used Airbnb a couple of times, and it's the first time a host asked me for passport copies. My hosts are from Spain and they said we must send them by e-mail filled documents of our information (ID number, Address, Phone number) and also to send them a copy of our passports! They say they need it for legal reasons. I feel unsafe to send my passport information.
Is it common to ask passport information in Spain? And is it safe to provide this information?
