In January I booked a guesthouse for March 28- April 1. The guesthouse allows 4 people and I added 4 people at checkout. I also let the host know that we were gonna be 4 after I book it. At the time of my booking it said, extra people-no charge. I checked in yesterday and today I receive an email saying that my host is requesting $135 more for extra people. I contacted Airbnb telling them that it wasn’t my fault and I don’t think it’s fair they let know me know after I have check in since I made my reservation 2 months ago. The host told me that it was Airbnb’s fault, but Airbnb is telling me that I have to pay since I agreed to the terms when I book my stay. I just wish they could’ve let me know before to find another place.
I think Airbnb should point out what they mean by "agreed to the terms", as it is just the opposite. The terms state a host can not change price after reservation is confirmed. See art 7.1.2 "Once a Guest requests a booking of your Listing, you may not request that the Guest pays a higher price than in the booking request" and 8.1.2 "Upon receipt of a booking confirmation from Airbnb, a legally binding agreement is formed between you and your Host"
Contact Airbnb again and ask to speak to somebody with brains.
Best regards,
Emiel
@Odalys12 No the host can't spring an extra guest charge on you after the fact if it wasn't mentioned in the listing and especially since you were clear about the number of guests when you booked and the host said nothing about extra guest charge at that time. And no, it's not Airbnb's fault, it sounds like the host didn't have their listing charges set up properly. So, as Emiel says, contact Airbnb again and read them the TOS he quoted.
If Airbnb is telling you that you do have to pay the extra charges after the booking has been made (which as others have said, is against their policy), then you can be guaranteed that it is their fault, and they know it.
There is a long-term, known glitch in the system, that causes the host's extra person fees and/or cleaning fees not to be added to the booking, but Airbnb of course, never openly accepts responsibility for this to the guest. Instead, they insist the host asks the guest for the extra funds that they should have been charged on checkout, making the host look like the villain.
I know this because I've had this happen several times and had running battles with Airbnb over it, as even when I had solid proof that is was their fault, not mine, they still tried to insist that I go back to the guest and ask them for the extra money, rather than rectify the situation themselves.
It's an underhand, unethical practice.. It fosters mistrust, suspicion and bad feeling between host and guest, and it needs to stop.
