I do not like that all this time I have been making wishlists thinking they were private for my personal travel plans and suddenly I see that my travels are public for all to see. I'm really annoyed with this and if it was made plain to me that this was happening I would not have been saving all my potential travel places nor entering personal information about who I was visiting or what I was doing there. I'm on the verge of closing my account altogether as I feel this is a major privacy issue.
No, you cannot make them private. Your profile is not "public" either - meaning, people cannot just browse through users and their profiles, they need to do a focused search to do this. If you read the terms of service, you can inform yourself of the privacy protections provided to you from Airbnb.
Sorry to see you will be leaving Airbnb if this is not the kind of protection you are looking for from an online service.
Correction: once a wishlist is created, you can go to "my wish lists" and make them "by invitation" only - meaning only those you invite can review it and add to it. This would make it more private for people to see what's on the list, but I think, still testing, that the wishlist will show up in your Wishlists as locked and not viewable. If you have more than one wishlist, then I can only see one of them at this time.

@Heidi-Lyn0 I believe you can make the wishlist less public. When you set up the file to name the wishlist there is a tab in the lower left that is privacy settings. Gives the option of everyone or invite only. That should make your wishlist private or only to people you invite to see it. Hope that helps.
Yes, that helps a bunch, thanks!
wow, thank's! I've just managed to delete some of the wish lists, and made other private. Great!
I agree I am pissed off about this actually. I was saving a list for a possible destination wedding and one person in my family saw it and now everyone knows and I am livid. Airbnb never made it clear that these lists were accessible to anyone. Why have a log in? I definitely feel this is an invasion of privacy 100%
