Hi there,
Like many (most / all) of you, I really enjoy hosting. I was therefore delighted to be accepted into the Plus program and complied with all the requirements. One requirement is to maintain a 4.8 average rating. This is very high. Earlier this year, we had something go wrong outside our control and received a very low rating from the affected guest. This has really reduced our overall rating and acts as a dead weight especially as we only have 29 reviews currently. I was using a hosting company but they were the ones who made the mistake and so I have taken over. Since that time, it's been 5 star heaven, I am a great host! Despite this my overall remains stubbornly at 4.6. and I fear the tyranny of poor reviews.
I really think the standard shouldn't be so high. Even without things going wrong, I notice that not every guest has the same expectations. Today is a great example of this. We had a guest who had an excellent stay and gave us a very positive review, he also gave us 4 stars. I'm sure he thinks 4/5 is a top rating but Airbnb does not. 4.8 stars means 96% of ratings should be 5 star, that is exceptionally high and I think unrealistic.
I hope that Airbnb reads this post and reviews this requirement. I am dedicated to excellence, my reviews are excellent. I think 4.5 average is more reasonable.
I welcome your comments, thank you.

Hello @Fletch1
Total stays
20+8+1 = 29
Maximum cumulative points= 29x5= 145
Cumulative points achieved
(20x5*) +(8x4*) +(1x2*) = (100)+(32) + (2) = 134
Percentage Quotient
134/145= 0.924137931034483
Average rating out of 5
=(0.924137931034483)x 5*= 4.620689655172414
Average (1dp): 4.6 *
Thanks,
Yadira
Hello @Fletch1
hope you are well. Your maths is correct and makes sense but based on airbnb’s logic it’s more around the 75% mark of 5 * of all overall ratings.
Say you had 4 stay
3x 5* =75%
1x 4* = 25%
(5+5+5+4) /(5*+ 5*+5* 5*) = 19/20 =0.96
because it’s averaged out of 5
=> (19/20)x5*= 4.8*
75% despite being quite High especially as Airbnb do hosts the inservice of letting guests think 4* is ok when it’s damaging to hosts- it’s no where near as that high as the 95% you assume and is a tad more attainable.
Hope this makes sense and good luck to you! 🙂
Dear Yadira,
Thank you so much for pointing this out, you have given me much needed hope. I guess I will just have to keep earning 5 star reveiws and hope the average rises! I like your maths, test this, here is the current tally:
20 x five stars
8 x four stars
1 x 2 stars
Overall 4.6
