I'm new to Airbnb. I'm not planning travel, but I was curious to see what might be available in my home town. A couple of the listings threw up red flags for me. One in particular showed photos of a residence that clearly is not in the town. It's not even in the same state. And the price was very high. Is this a scam listing? How do you know if a place is actually real?

if you're fairly certain this listing is not where or what it says you should flag it. unfortunately the number of scam listings is growing but a good indicator for a 'real' listing is the reviews. good reviews = hosts at work to create good experiences for travelers. That being said, new listings don't have reviews until somebody stays there and leaves one. I personally only book with hosts that tell me something about themselves in their profile (and that have good reviews). Superhost status is another good sign but not necessary for a great experience. If something looks fishy it probably is..

1. Contacting Airbnb's Community Experts
The easiest and quickest way to get answers to any issues is through contacting Airbnb's Community Experts. If they cannot answer your question, they have the ability to re-route you to Airbnb
Step 1: Visit https://www.airbnb.ca/help/contact_us
Step 2: From the bottom of the screen, choose either "My question is about something else" or "I have a different issue"
Step 3: Follow the prompts to figure out what best describes your issues. Some things you choose will take you to specific information whereas others you can fill in the text box and submit your question.
When you submit a question, you can expect an answer back from a Community Expert within five minutes but usually less. If the Community Expert cannot help you, they can re-route your issue to Airbnb who will then contact you. Airbnb Community Experts do not have access to your account information so if it is a question that can only be answered with account information, they will re-route you automatically. Airbnb Community Experts are available 24/7 and again, usually you will have an answer from them within minutes.
2. Contacting Airbnb Via Twitter
I find the second best and easiest way to contact Airbnb regarding any issues I may be having is by using Twitter. Airbnb seems to have dedicated staff who monitor their Twitter feeds and I usually hear back from them within 5-10 minutes of posting my isssue.
Step 1: Log into Twitter
Step 2: Search for @Airbnbhelp and choose "Follow" them
Step 3: Send a Direct Message (DM) explaining your issue and wait for their response. They may ask for information such as your listing but always provide it over DM so it is not public.
3. Calling Airbnb's Customer Experience Line

When I booked, s/he accepted, then said it's occupied and told me to cancel.
In that case AirBnb says to send a cancellation request to the host, so s/he will cancel and I get a full refund.
His/her only reviews are two cancellations. So this seems to be clearly a scam run by this guy.
Now s/he refuses to cancel and says the apartment has become available somehow.
If I cancel I don't get back the AirBnb fee.
What should I do?
Is this some scam by AirBnb to get additional fees?
This is not an airbnb scam - they advised you correctly in asking you to send a cancellation request to the host. It is either that or the host cancels and in both instances the host will face penalties. If there is anyone scamming, it is the host, trying to wiggle himself/herself out of the penalties by asking you to cancel and loose the aribnb fees you have paid. It is totally immoral and unprofessional of the host to ask you to cancel.
In this case I would contact airbnb again and ask them to cancel for you or having you transferred to a more reliable host. This one is a liability likely to cancel last minute and leave you in the gutter. Host cancellations are red flags - you should not book with such hosts. Pay a little more and go with a superhost if you can find one.

I was nearly scammed twice in one week. Amsterdam is very tricky. Someone calling themselves Carla ** claimed to have a very nice place in Damrak ** but I would have to send details outside AirBnB.
This is what she wrote:

It appeared on a page belonging to some called Leone who had an apartment to rent in Regulierssteeg. I would suggest that listings in central Amsterdam should be treated as dubious, especially if the prices seem to be too good to be true. If there are no reviews then this is a bad sign.

@Raffaella-Giovanna0, that link is NOT to Airbnb. The listing is a scam. Do NOT proceed.
It is a web site designed to look exactly like Airbnb, but it is not Airbnb.
You can tell because it starts with "http://airbnb.piso-reserva.us".
If you are on the real Airbnb site, it will start with "https://www.airbnb.com" or (for Venezula) "https://www.airbnb.co.ve"
There also will be a "lock" that you can click on that will identify who owns the domain you are visiting.

I'm having real problems in getting airbnb to remove an obviously fake listing - its using my description and location but the picture show a high rise apratment and we are in a small English village. I've reported it 4 times and each time they say they'll investigate and nothjing happens. I've actually had people turn up on my doorstep who made a booking using the fraudulent site and I had to explain to them what happened. AirBnB are still taking no action so in effect they are helping the fraudsters. Any ideas on how I escalate this to someone who will take it seriously. Thanks John

I wonder what Airbnb does to investigate in these situations.
I would think, though, that after a few guests show up at your place and get turned away that there would be a stream of bad reviews on that fake listing. Do none of the people who get taken in by the other listing leave a review?

Just post the listing on their FB and Twitter and say you have reported it four times and they have failed to remove it, resulting in unhappy guests who have been conned turning up on your doorstep.
