Security deposit

I could use some advice re security deposit. 

Is this his common practice for hosts to add. If so, how much is suggested?

@Francesca945 This amount varies. On average the hosts that I've stayed with have a $100-250 USD security deposit. I, as a host, have a $100 security deposit requirement for guests. However, in all my years hosting I have never had to deduct a portion from any past stay. If you have exceptionally valuable flooring, antique furniture, appliances, etc. perhaps a higher deposit is justifiable. Otherwise, a simple one within the $100-250 USD range will do.

Hmm. I do ha e valuable art but I only rent a room in my home. Makes it tricky though. I wonder how one proves damage has been done?
