Hi, my guests caused my toilet to ovverflow because they used too much toilet paper which caused a blockage. The "black" water flood caused damage to the laminate hardwood flooring in the next room. The walls in the half-bath and the next room were also water damaged. They failed to let me know immediately about this problem. The guests feel that because it was an accident, they shouldn't have to pay for the deductible my homeowner's insurance charges me. My insurance will cover all except the deductible. But now, I'm not sure if my own insurance should pay for the damages.
These guests are still here. These are my first guests and this is their first experience staying at an airbnb. Do you think my own insurance should pay for this or should Airbnb's insurance pay for the damages? I'm thinking I should let me insurance know about Airbnb and let them settle it with Airbnb. Any recommendations? My homeowner's insurance is with the triple A (AAA) of California.
@Eve2 Luckily you have a pretty hefty Security Deposit. You should file a claim through the Resolution Center:
You may need to get written estimates for the repair as well as pictures to give to Airbnb. This should be done as soon as practical and in any event within 48 hours of check out.
Hope your Security Deposit covers the entire amount of repairs!
I modified my listing with a deposit after the accident happened. So when my guests booked my place, I didn't have a deposit requirement. Live and learn. 🙂
We had the same experience with our guests overflowing the toilet. How was your experience with the airbnb claim? Were you able to provide evidence within 48 hours?
