Hey everyone,
I'm just wondering if anyone else doesn't see the point in guests being allowed to rank us based on our location. I personally receive a few not so great ratings based on our location, which effects my overall rating. Everything else we are rated for is perfect but naturally we can't do anything about where we are located.
This is annoying as the general location is clearly displayed on the listing. So I find it strange that guests can then rate you poorly based on this when they already know where the general location is before they book.
Thoughts on this would be apreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Kagan

Location rating is not factored into your overall rating, @Kagan1, which is not an average of the individual ratings. It is feedback to you if you wish to use the feedback. Most hosts can't do anything about location, right?
I am 10 minutes away from a popular music festival venue here in the desert and often am asked how far away am I from that venue. I always answer that question in the context of why a guest is coming to the area. I know it will take at least an hour during the festival. Also, my area is very walkable to shops and restaurants, but not during warm/hot months with 100 - 125 degrees F, so I always mention that.
My point is that perhaps you can have communication with your prospective guests about their expectations as to location. Additionally, you can also add information in your listing description.
@Kagan1 probably the most discussed problem with the ratings 🙂 It is so that guests can rate the neighborhood probably, but they book places and know where they are staying and it still isn't good enough for them. Why book it when they don't like it is a mistery to me. I had an apartment in the city center at the main pedestrian road ( it can't get more central than that) and some people still didn't like it, you cant please everyone. I have just learned to accept it since I don't see Airbnb changing something about it any time soon.
Ah great, thanks for the feeback @Ana1136. Nice to know I am not the only one that feels this way. Seems illogical to me so I hope AIRBNB will consider removing this rating as it also doesn't make sense to most hosts out there from what you've just said.

Airbnb uses the location ratings as a data-collection tool, in order to determine the most profitable sector of each town/city, and centre their maps accordingly.
It's true that the location score doesn't affect your overall rating, but it absolutely does impact your search placement.
@Kagan1 Getting decent location ratings isn't just about it appearing accurately on the map. Most guests have never been to the area they book- they have no idea if it's a noisy street, if it's in what looks like a "seedy" area, if there's a coffee shop down the street.
So it's important to make sure your listing describes the location accurately, warts and all. If you're right on a busy, noisy street, it's important to mention that, but it doesn't have to be a negative thing, you can word it honestly and make it a positive-"Right in the heart of the city, this is a vibrant, busy area full of shops of all kinds, a great choice of restaurants, and nightlife, all within a few blocks of the apartment. Of course, being in this location means it can also be noisy. Bring earplugs if you find it hard to sleep with some background noise."
Giving honest distances, as Linda does, can also help with location ratings. My place is in the coutryside and is a 20 minute walk to town and the beach, so I talk about this in my listing and also reiterate it in messaging with the guest during the booking process. I suggest they have some comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and a small flashlight if they think they'll be coming home after dark.
And if you have interaction with your guests, you can let your guests know that with an Airbnb, the location rating refers to whether the location was well-described, not whether it was exactly where they wanted to be. If you've described it accurately, it's their problem that they booked a place that was far from the sights they wanted to see, or where the course they came to take is being held.
But some guests will still give a bad location rating, no matter what. Not much you can do about those.
That is a very good point to make to guests. I too have just received another 4 star for location, even though the overall rating was a 5 star. Frankly I am sick of it. I've spent so much time, effort and money recently completely overhauling my Airbnb to make sure everything is perfect, addressing any issues my guests have had in the past. I am in a rural area. It is a 15 to 20 minute drive into town...which seems longer when you're driving at 100km/hr through farm and bushland. I make this super clear in my listing and always tell people this when they book, especially if they're going to a wedding or other festival in town. If they're drinkers, it will not work as there is no taxi service.
To have my listing lowered by somebody's inability to understand my very clear words is not only extremely frustrating, but also disheartening. It gives the guests the power over something they really have no right to comment or rate me on. Initially I thought it was because I was 18km out of town and they didn't like that, but noticing the complaints from most hosts tells me I'm not alone.
Location is a burden!!!
My place is in a rural area... although this is very clearly mentioned in my listing...some guests state that property is to far from center!!!
Maybe guests should rate how accurate description is in listing for the location...and not the location itself which is something that cannot change...
OMG. One of my last guests put me down In accuracy mentioning “wrong address”. I send it in messenger. It is correct in the system. But people are using gps and not their eyes. If the navigator will lead them to the moon they will say that it is hosts fault!
The same people left me feedback suggesting to put instruction how to close shower curtain... I’ll think to put instructions how to use toilet paper, toothpaste, towels... Lost case:(
@Belinda10, and@Maria2527 The Location, is pre ordained
They see the location before they book. Then they arrive and decide they don't like the location...and rate you down!! Unfair! Wrong! Airbnb needs to review this!!!
