Wireless interconnected smoke detectors

Has anyone had any issues with wireless interconnected smoke detectors, devices not communicating, short battery life or any other problems? Are ther particular brands that are better than others? Are the unbranded ones that can be ordered from Malaysia the same units as the branded ones but without the brand name packaging and cost? The unbranded ones are $8.50 each vs. $45 each for branded, and they are all made in Malaysia, so it doesn't seem like I have a lot of choices . Either buy a product that someone is being paid hardly anything to make and some distributor a few bucks, or the same thing and line some corporate fat cat's pockets also. Any Thoughts?
