evictions and conversions the dark side airbnb

Top Answer

Airbnb’s anti-discrimination policy states that they prohibit listings that promote racism, discrimination, or harm to individuals or groups, and require all users to comply with local laws. Yet, listing vacation rentals in illegal settlements promotes structural discrimination, theft of Palestinians’ land, and direct violations of international law. Through earning fees from settlement vacation rentals, Airbnb is directly profiting from the continuing occupation and dispossession of Palestinians.

@Anonymous, this is an old article. It references Proposition F to restrict AirBnB listings as an upcoming issue to be voted on in San Francisco. But that measure lost at the ballot box back in 2015.

That was clearly a rigged vote.

Airbnb poured more than $8 million into the campaign to defeat Prop. F, dramatically outspending the measure’s backers, who raised $482,000.

The No on F campaign bombarded voters with TV ads and campaign mailers claiming the measure would spur people to spy on and sue neighbors, and would violate privacy. The Internet Archive tracked more than 26 hours of anti-Prop. F ads aired on San Francisco local TV stations from Aug. 25 to Oct. 26, during which time the Yes on F campaign aired just 16 minutes of TV commercials, it said.

In a total of 133,583 voters, 55.06 percent — or 73,556 people — voted to reject Proposition F, while 60,027, or 44.94 percent, voted in favor of the measure. Considering how much money Airbnb lavished on defeating Prop. F, the margin was “still pretty remarkable.”

@Anonymous, okay.

So this is the Help discussion board for AirBnB.

Is there anything you need help with?

But I actually had one more question. What do you think of these murders?

I hope that this wakes you up to the fact that Airbnb is about bringing people together, and about loving one another However, that must not be done at the expense of others. Makes it not quite so shiny and happy, eh?

 - Airbnb is not only perpetrating a crime against Palestinians living under a belligerent/illegal/brutal occupation, it is also a spreading scourge that is dramatically driving up the cost of housing in countless cities around the world and making it impossible for people who actually live and work there to put a roof over their heads. Like food, water and clothing, housing is a basic human need and hence, a human right as stipulated in the 1949 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is not a commodity!!!

@Anonymous, I think the situation is terrible, and I understand people's anger about it.

I'm not sure AirBnB is the best target for the anger though. My understanding of the situation is that the problem of the settlements pre-dates the existence of AirBnB, so I don't think I would blame AirBnB for this.

I mean, is anyone saying that if AirBnB didn't exist, the problem of the settlements would not have happened?

I appreciate your passion for the issue; I don't think targeting AirBnB is going to get the result you are looking for.

You are free to spend your time and energy on whatever avenue you feel is going to help the most, though. Far be it from me to tell you what is going to work and what is not.

If posting articles here in this forum helps the Palestinians, then more power to you.
