occupancy taxes

I have been a host for four years and recently our lovely government has decided to charge an occupancy tax to those in the county that rent for AirBNB. I have noticed that my daily price is reduced to reflect the occupancy taxes charged by the county and also noticed that when I was traveling I was charged the occupancy taxes when I rented from another AirBNB host. How is AirBNB charging both members of the transaction legally??? This seems like a serious scam that the government is all on board with and needs to be addressed.

It is most frustrating to have to charge a certain percentage in taxes.  AIRBNB just doesn't allow you to adjust your fees to charge guests whatever taxes we must pay for their stay.  There is an option that, I don't feel, is viable enough -- under "community fees," you can place a certain percentage, but does not include the cleaning fees in calculating the percentage.  This is very much unlike Homeaway/VRBO, where you can set a tax and have that tax include the room rate, and cleaning fees.  Both are taxed in my City.  Now, I think what you are referring to is AIRBNB's special arrangement with certain jurisdictions.  For example, they have agreed here in Sonoma County to collect taxes for the County.  You have to ask, I don't think it's a scam.  They just have various agreements.  Unfortunately, we are not within County limits here in Sonoma, so we don't benefit and have to set our fees in this contorted way I described.  Not ideal or easy.
