I live in Jefferson Parish Louisiana. My husband and I were considering hosting AirB&B. I just came back from a parish council meeting where AirB&B is not welcome. This and all short term rental has been made illegal. It must be 30 days. If you would look at the legislative proposal it makes it nearly impossible to have or use this sort of business. This is just outside New Orleans, and a perfect destionation for this type of short term rental. We used short term rentals in the past and enjoyed them emensly. Its a perfect alternative for persons like us to travel comfortably and affordably. I was mildly suprised that one of the short term rental vendors wasn't represented as well as none of the current hosts. I would hope that the company would want to investigate this type of legislation and potentially speak up to help these small business owners. This could be a mega-market for short term rentals. 10 minutes outside the city/french quarter, easy access with UBER, UBER is much more affordable than Parking downtown. 10 minutes to the air port, quiet area, just the way many of us like to travel.
The proposal is available on line, Jefferson Parish government....
Thanks.
Jo
I'm a current host in Jefferson Parish, and was caught unaware by this legislation. My husband and I feel like we've been -- well, use your imagination. They've completely outlawed short-term rentals through Airbnb, VRBO etc, because of "future" quality of life issues. Maybe we had not been paying attention, but the last thing I heard about this was in October - and they were "considering" it. And then they vote - and outlaw it. I had called my council member, he didn't return my phone call. They weren't interestest, Sheng bragged that there was very little opposition. And why would there be? There are only about 300 airbnb hosts in Jefferson Parish, 75 in the impacted area (so the news says) - and what do the citizens of Jefferson Parish care? It's not like they are going to rent an Airbnb in their own parish.
Airbnb's were touted as home to TRANSIENTS! That was their take on it. That transients stay in them, and strangers that will rat their neighborhoods. Also that big companies will come in and buy up all the homes and turn them into airbnbs. I don't know what can be done at this point. The legislation passed.
I am also a Airbnb host in Metairie. I didn’t get word of this council meeting until yesterday morning when it was too late to try to do anything. I don’t remember hearing anything about this ban possibly being passed yesterday and was very let down to hear it was unanimous. I would like to be hopeful and think there is something we can do. To know there are over 500 short term rental hosts in our area and only 2 showed up yesterday to dispute it sounds like to me no one was awAware of the meeting either.
I'm having the same problem in Squamish, British Columbia... but we still have time to save it.
I am working with a suportive council member... but I need DATA. I am deeply disappointed that Airbnb won't offer any support. At there should be generic background research on the benefits of Airbnb and how to regulate to maximize benefits while alleviating problems which do exist.
I also wanted to send a survey to my fellow hosts to raise awareness and gather data, but that was also a non-starter.
Too big to care?
Does anyone know of such research or how to work around Airbnb's limitations so I can gather the information myself?
“The Short Term Rental Advocacy Center (STRAC) was created by Airbnb, HomeAway, TripAdvisor and FlipKey, in response to requests from owners, operators, and hosts who are seeking help to engage with policymakers that may be considering how formalizing fair and reasonable short-term rental regulations can responsibly foster this growing industry. STRAC is a project of the Travel Technology Association.”
DJ, do you need a business license in seabeck if you just offer lodging to short term stays?
We are considering an Airbnb rental of a small home we have in Jefferson Parish Louisiana. Can anyone tell me what the status is now? Can we apply for a license and possibly be granted a license or is there still a ban? I can't find updated information anywhere. Also, our little house is actually in a comercial zone, will that matter?
Wow @Sue668 $750 application fee, I found this on the Jefferson Parish website.
I reviewed (if briefly) the SUMMARY NO. 24903 of ORDINANCE NO. 25513 from last February to see if i can find out who they will actually grant a license to--or if there is an absolute moratorum on licenses.
One of my questions is whether in Jefferson Parish (like Orleans) they will only grant a license if there is a homestead excemption for the property? The property we would like to use for airbnb is currently a longer than 30 day rental on the Wesbank in Harvey. Does anyone know if it is worth our going through the expense of applying for the short term rental license with Jefferson Parish? I don't want to apply and then be told they will only grant for properties with homestead exemptions and/or there is a moratorum period.
Anyone have any information?
I have a short term rental and was blind sigh with a notice on the door. I need this we have to find a way to get this ban gone. We have to get information for this.
