Access by host to guest space

I feel unsure about entering the space where guests are staying - for example to do garden maintenance, or occassionally, to access the store room in the house where I keep my own things.  I do not want to disturb guests, yet feel it is still my house and garden, and it feels strange to feel it is out of bounds to me.  Can anybody suggest guidelines on this matter, or tell me how they approach it?

It's easy enough if you agree the boundaries up front, or when the guests arrive.

For example, you might want to say to them: on Sat afternoon I need to do some gardening and need to do x, y and z. Is it ok if I etc.... or would you prefer me to do it at a later/earlier time on Sat.
