Airbnb getting shut down in Sydney...

Not sure which part of this is worse, the ban part seems like an utter nightmare since all it takes is a complaint from neighbours

The NSW government will impose a 180-day cap on the number of days empty properties can be rented in Sydney, and will give strata corporations the power to ban Airbnb in their buildings.

The reforms will implement a two-strike policy, which would see hosts or guests who commit two serious breaches of the code within two years banned from using Airbnb and other similar platforms for five years, and placed on an exclusion register.

@ pete Where did you see this? I know there have been various discussions but I wasn't aware anything had been finalised.

It looks like you can rent as much as you want for  listings where the host is present during the stay, which is good news.

It is very bad news for people who make it a business with multiple listings.

Yeah - but the two strikes thing applies to everyone I think. Neighbours would have you shut down before you blink if guests park in wrong place, make noise, trash, party, smoke etc.

I would think that there'll be  a little more rigour around the complaints process than that.  The complaint would need to concern particularly egregious behaviour and be robustly evidenced.  I'll be very surprised if there's more than a handful of registerable complaints each year

It also allows apt complex to ban Airbnb if 75% of owners agree.

Body corp already have this power.

I really wish people would read the whole article for these things, a mountain out of a mole hill comes to mind....

"New planning laws, which will be introduced in coming months, will impose a 180-day cap on properties used for Airbnb-style letting in greater Sydney when hosts are not present, with no caps across the rest of the state."

This is one suburb out of the whole of NSW.

Why the hell punish one suburb out of the NSW state? Only morons would do that!

MORONS

@ Darren, the only mole hill is the LIBERAL PARTY and ALEX whoever Independent. As if these city apartments, beach apartments will be suitable to mole hill politicians housing tenants. GET a life SYDNEY POLLIES! Backward thinking isn't going to win votes at the next election. BRING IT ON!

SO you think this is one SUBURB out of the whole NSW! This is SYDNEY and SYDNEY doesn't need MORONS! Clover Moore and Alex Greenwich is passe.....passe means they should go......not have any input in governance. Exploiting Tax payer funds hiring independent surveys by their friends won't solve your housing tennant issues. Since in power, how much funding from City of Sydney profits have gone into their developments for housing tenants.........not much! it went to a problematic non built light rail and bad cycleways that was built then ripped out.......!!! Blaming lack of housing because few apartments were rented to tourists/ work related, families is WRONG. The survey by Sydney University is inaccurate and so are unions for tenants. There are excessive oversupply of apartments in Sydney and more will be built.

TIME to retire let decent democratic public servants serve the public.

As for the Liberal Party, they are as backward as the #@!!???? sending this SYDNEY into bankrupt undrivable, unwalkable mess! Its embarassing!

Hardly one suburb!

Greater Sydney (Greater Capital City Statistical Area), as classified by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, extends from Wyong and Gosford in the north to the Royal National Park in the south and follows the coastline in between. Towards the west, the region includes the Blue Mountains, Wollondilly and Hawkesbury. Greater Sydney covers 12,367.7 sq km and is made up of 35 local councils.

These councils contain more than 650 suburbs.

Not it's not.  It's the entire Greater Sydney Region, an area of over 12,000 sq kms with a population over 5 million.

Greater Sydney = many suburbs, NOT one.
