Damage and Security Deposit recovery

I recently had one of those guests we all dread and who give Airbnb a bad name. House was trashed, carpets trashed, chairs broken, white goods trashed... I have been lucky I guess and it was my first time to claim through Airbnb. I was SHOCKED to see that anything over $300 required a police report. Each item listed (extra cleaning 6 hours, carpet cleaning for 3 bedrooms, replacement chairs) cost $300. But this is hardly a police matter. They have much more important things to be worrying about. I have claimed through the insurance required by VRBO which was a much better experience. Does anyone have any insight on this?

The police are not going to reply with serins and lights. They will get to your report when they have time.  This is part of their job and why you pay taxes... it is the "serve" part of "serve and protect".

Vandalism is a crime, call the police and file a report.

I have had to deal with insurance companies in these type of matters and the insurance companies like police reports.
