Disgusting guest :-/

So frustrated. *For tight stomachs only*

This was the first girl I booked for AirBnB, though by the time she came, I'd had many AirBnB guests. Anyways, to get her booked, I had to go OUT OF MY WAY to book her, and we both had to contact AirBnB to get it done. Finally it worked out. Because it took forever to work it out with AirBnB and I waited to let her book my place (thus denying other requests), she said "I'll be your best guest ever..."

She's bout 30 if I recall correctly, a visiting researcher at the same university my husband works at, and was staying in my apartment with another researcher (professional, grown up, nothing could go wrong...right?). WRONG.

She KNEW that I was abroad, and that there was a guest before her, and one after her, so I had asked them to keep the place clean ("like your own place, or like your mom's if you aren't clean"). She then asked details...and I responded...well, clean your dishes, strip the sheets and toss them in the laundry area etc- all not a big deal...

I get back from my 3 weeks abroad, and my LANDLADY (who lives above me and keeps an eye on the apartment but also does the KEY HANDOFF for AirBnB guests), said WHOA...that second girl/her friend "**** the toilet." And she went on to explain how she and her worker had to spend time thoroughly cleaning it for the next guest..and I felt AWFUL (mind you, my landlady is like 75...).

I know it had to be bad, because when I got back, and did alllll the laundry and cleaned up the place, I was on my hands and knees cleaning the bathroom and I noticed...splatter...around the toilet. I don't mean in it. You read that correctly..I mean aaaarooound. Like between the toilet and the sink.

Look, I get that stuff happens. Apparently people get sick- really sick. But, I left the bathroom cleaning supplies RIGHT THERE, next to the toilet...and I don't think anyone or any mother keeps a bathroom that gross.

Like, do I have to edit my description to "if you "**** the toilet" return it to its former white form...?"

I'm not trying to be inappropriate or obnoxious, but this situation made me look like an IDIOT to my super sweet landlady, it was GROSS for us both to clean, and I hadn't gotten the chance to somehow write this girl a review because I've been busy with jetlag, work, personal things, and new guests...

What. Do. I. Do? Anyone familiar with this situation?

Thanks a lot for your time 🙂

@Christina42 So sorry to hear about this experience.  Unfortunately it happens in every host's career.  If it were me, I'd take my landlady out for a nice dinner and / or get her a nice thank you present.  (You've probably already done this).

As for your guest, if you or your landlady had the foresight to take pictures of the mess, I'd file a claim against the security deposit for additional cleaning costs.  Claims have to be made before the next guests arrive so it might be too late anyway.

All you can do is leave a review such that no host will accept a reservation from her again.  No need to go into great detail, just a sentence or two that says she left an awful mess and that you would not recomend her to other hosts.  A thumbs down for sure.  With this kind of review she won't be able to Instant Book as well.  That's the price guests pay for being so inconsiderate and expecting others to clean up after them.  Geez!

Hope this helps a little bit.. eventually these kinds of people get weeded out of the system.
