OK so i'll try to make this a short story.
This guest stayed one week, everything was fine, good communication, out most of the day, friendly and respectful of house rules. He asked to leave his luggages the last day because he had a late flight. I live upstairs and accepted to take his luggage in my home.
He was at my door the next morning, mortified, telling me right away that he had been sick all night and the the bedding were stained, that he was so sorry. I didn't know what to expect.
He in fact had diarreha. I managed to save the sheets and duvet cover by washing them twice. Mattress was saved by the mattress protector but the mattress protector was stained after 2 washes and the duvet i put directly into the garbage, it was not a machine friendly duvet. I messaged him, explained, he apologized again and accepted to refund the new ones i had to buy the same day for my upcoming guests.
I can't really blame him for being horribly sick, even if a part of me wonder why he was not able to make it to the toilet. I have no reason to think he was wasted or drunk or anything. He apoligized in profusion and i already received his money through airbnb. I do want to blame him for leaving things as i found them. I mean, why the hell didn't he undo the bed, put the sheets in machine ? Thing is, i suspect he forgot about the machines, wich are behind folding doors. He didn't use any room except for the bedroom and bathroom, i could tell, and the bathroom was cleaned by him as it was much cleaner than i usually find it after my guests (no need to say i disinfected every inches anyway). Has it been me, with no machines, i would have prefered to throw everything away and offer the host to buy replacements or pay right away.
This guest has no review, new member since 2018. He arleady left me a review. I don't know what to do. Can't be factual without him being humiliated. Can't really recommend him either, but if my instinct is worth anything, he really was unlucky and very sick.
What would you do ?
I see no problem recommending this guest. He had a problem, quickly admitted it & willingly paid to “repair”.
Im not interested in extra bodily fluids, but s**t happens. This was as good an outcome as was possible. Unless he pooped the bed on purpose. Seems unlikely.
To be clear, I wouldn’t say nothing. But I wouldn’t say anything specific. “Lovely guest, communicative, friendly etc. Unfortunately had an accident but quickly notified us & immediately reimbursed us to repair. Welcome to return and we wish him well in all future travels”
@Kelly149, @Kim87, and @Emiel1, if it were me, I would not mention the accident at all, and I would give him a great review. He was very sick, probably didn't even remember the washing machine, and might have had another accident on the floor during the process. He left your bathroom cleaner than your other guests.
He deserves nothing but a great review in my book.
PS: If you don't know how someone can't get to the bathroom fast enough, you have never been that sick. He has been a generous guest after a very embarrassing event. Be thankful you didn't come home to a dead guest. (AirBnB would have a field day with that and you wouldn't have had any kind of reimbursement.) And I don't believe people get diarrhea from drinking. Usually comes out the top end.
Best,
Sure, is a judgment call to leave it out. But I don’t believe what I wrote is at all a “bad” review. It shows he is quite responsible.
@Kelly149, of course, do as you see fit, but to mention "accident" implies that something bad happened... which was "obviously" caused by him because he offered to take responsibility. You bring up a lot of invisible questions with words like this.
Best,
Thank you all, i will sleep on this and decide tomorrow.
My hesitation was mostly about him leaving the mess for his host (or the cleaning lady) in all display. Did he forgot about the machines i showed him during the welcome visit ? I know i could never leave things like this if it happened to me but @Kimberly54 is right, maybe i've never been that sick and maybe being that sick made him all messed up the next day.
I don't think mentionning « a small incident that he quickly told us about and paid for » will discourage other hosts to have him if i also emphazise on his qualities as a guest. On the other hand, if another cleaneliness issue comes up on a future trip for him - not specifically talking about diarrhea here - the future host will have an input about this guest. Wich i don't have. I always presume people have good intentions, it's a malediction and a blessing at the same time.
@Kim87, I agree with the others and I would not mention it. It is obvious that he felt genuinely sorry or he would not have come to you to tell you, which I'm sure was embarrassing for him. I think it was an accident and I would recommend him and not mention it in this case.
I do agree with you in finding it a little weird that he did not try to clean the bedding himself. But, in my opinion, what makes him a great guest is that fact that he brought the accident to your attention and offer to pay for the damages. This right here describes a good guest vs. a bad guest in my book. Had he not mentioned anything to you and you walked in to find that mess and then refused to pay for it, you would be writing him a horrible review! Either way you had to clean it up but the outcome is much different.
@Emilia42i think me being a host influences my view of the way one should react in this case.
I will probably not mention anything. Anyway this whole reflexion isn't about me, it was a bad day, we bought replacements, he payed for it, end of the story. I was mostly wondering if i should flag future hosts. All of your comments make me think i probably shouldn't.
@Emilia42this is me speaking bad english, sorry, french is my first language. To warn is the right word i think ? I was thinking about giving future hosts an input about cleanliness in case this guest leave a place dirty again. He's a new airbnb user, if he had a few good reviews i wouldn't even be thinking about all this.
