The guest who set of an Axe bomb! (

Well it finally happened - we had a VERY problematic pair of guests, newbies, nice people in themselves but it was like a skunk let off teen spirit!

We had to eat dinner at at a friends and I'm glad indeed we had the next couple of days blocked out but sad that we spent the time washing everything downstairs including sponging down the walls & ceilings of both bedrooms, the bathroom & the lower hallway with ammonia. I ended up repainting the ceiling in the downstairs hallway as the flat plaint really soaked up the "aroma". You could smell it even out in the driveway.

I also threw out one curtain as it was too fragile to go thru the six washings with white vinegar that worked on the other curtains. There was no ill intent but **bleep**! I am going to have to send them a message. If we had had a same or next day booking we wouldn't have been able to host them - I wouldn't  have wanted to stay downstairs myself & we couldnt eat dinner in the dining room the last couple of days. (I kept thinking I'd wiped it out but it kept reasserting itself) Even when my son was in middle school he & his gang never were that rank, yikes! Sally

@Sally221  You may need to use Kilz and repaint the whole place if the smell keeps coming back. How old were these guests? Did they really set off an axe bomb in your place. Some idiot kid at the local High School set one off a few years ago and they had to evacuate the school and cancel the next day to fix the issues it casued.

They were 25 & 50 something- I think we are Finally okay it was just massive amounts of spray- I actually first smelt it from our second story deck! I think it is finally gone- I was a painter in one of my many incarnations & I'm partial to Bullseyeproducts myself (I also have a secret stash of old school primer) The younger guy is from Germany & the older has lived there decades. It was strange. I'm working out the diplomatic way of saying "Just Don't"  My kid knew better after I wouldn't give him a ride unless he reshowered.  But he was 13 at the time & that's a dumb age , Sally

Hi Sally, I am sure there would be someone in your area who would rent out Ironising filters, and I have to tell you, they are amazing at getting rid of unwanted odours. The Hepa filtration scrubs everything from the air.

We have a Whirlpool Whispure 1000 built into the cottage air circulation system.  We don't have an exhaust fan in the living area but guests can cook eggs and bacon for themselves at 8.00am, be gone by 9.00 and by 9.30 there is absolutely no evidence of cooking in the cottage. It's great if you strike a smoker as well, within an hour or so it will have the air cleaned up again.

Next time you strike this get onto someone in your area who rents them out......it is far cheaper and easier than having to re-paint or wash everything.

Just make sure you don't get the cheaper Ozone filter...It is well documented now that Ozone filters can create, or exacerbate lung problems and some authorities around the world are banning their use.

A look on Ebay or Craigslist or similar I am sure would  offer ironising filters for sale at a reasonable price.....It's a good investment!

Here is the link to a review on the current model that has replaced the one we have!

Good luck and keep this in mind Sally!

Well, there could have been an accident. I once had guests who left the house smelling so strongly of aftershave it was insane. I washed the sheets like 7 times, when I dried them over my balustrades the wood of the balustrades took it on as well. Anyway,  I wrote them in my diary as guests never allowed back (this is long before Airbnb existed). This was in a wine district where you should not enter a tasting area wearing perfume etc as it contaminates the space. I was having a chat with a friend of mine who worked at a winery and she told me that this couple must have come to the winery as well, as it left a wake of scent and they were super apologetic. They told her that they had broken a bottle in their accommodation. Now everything made sense.

But their memory lingered on.
