Has anyone else had an instant book by an adult stating their significant other is under age (17 in this case)?
I looked through Airbnb online help to see what the rules were against minors staying without parent/guardian and I didn't see anything. I also called Airbnb this morning and they stated that since the guest that booked was over 18, this is acceptable.
I still did not feel comfortable so I asked to cancel, sounds like I'm being penialized for this. I doubt this is worst case scenario (runaway, kidnapping, etc) or the guest wouldn't have been forthright with the info, HOWEVER, this still doesn't seem right and I would think this puts more liability on the host. I also don't think it's fair that I get dinged by cancelling in this situation.
Anyone else have this experience?

you can’t accept such a stay without parental consent in writing, with a passport copy’of the parents maybe. If airbnb does not want to cancel, I would ask them to confirm, that’host guaranty covers potential liabilities, like the parents demanding child suport if the girl gets pregnant during the stay. Not to mention potential criminal pursuit for prostition of a minor, as the host facilitates the proceedings. In France, they could pursue you for that.
I’m glad they came to their senses on second thought and cancelled the stay.
After a single minor guest on a relative’s passport, I raised the question with a friend who works as a policeman in minor protection. He told me to never accept such a booking, as it can land you in horrible problems. Imagine the minor guest falls ill or has an accident. You have to call an ambulance and then explain, how a hurt minor ended up in your house, no one knows any contact info or real name, nobody can decide on surgery or treatment.
I've had a few minors stay without their parent this year (they are a friend of a child of the adult). No problems at all, and really none of my business either 🙂
None of mine either, unless I know for a fact there is something illegal going on.
Allowing minors without proof of parentage (OFFICIAL Birth Certificates AND Social Security Cards) IS Everybodies business. Child rape/pornographers/human trafficers all LOVE people who look the other way, they COUNT ON IT.
FACT? NOT SAFE. NOT MORAL. NOT LEGAL. And I can bet AirBnB's million dollar insurancers will drop anyone if arrested, charged with being part of a human trafficking ring, which is what anyone would be, for harboring minors being trafficed!
NOT everone has a "MORAL COMPASS". Some are just immoral and "MORONS."
Let me get this right, so if YOUR daughter or son were kidnapped, then I can quote you as saying that your response is, "It's none of your business." Is that right?
Hopefully you mean you contacted ABB and they cancelled the reservation.

Most people in the US do not have a Passport, I know things used to be different in France I remeber many decades ago you had to hand over your Passport which had to be registered with the local Police, do not remembr having to do anything more recently, but it has been some time.
USA has legal photo ID's and Official Birth Certificates and Social Security Cards as proof of identity. I cannot believe anyone except criminals would allow minors into their homes unless with valid ID. NOT safe. NOT Legal. NOT Moral.
I am sure local police departments conduct stings to check on this and if not, then they should, and probably will in the near future.
You have just called 99.999% of all Hosts some rather unpleasant names.
For your information as someone who had a Liquor License, was a TIPS Trainer, documents like a SSN card and Birth Certificate are not valid ID.
Photo ID in the US would include Passports and Driving Licenses and State issued Photo ID. Show up with a Birth Certificate and you would not be served by me.
Obviously varies by Country, I certainly had nothing apart from my Passport for most of my life, and certainly did not take that on domestic trips.
I have no idea what you think the Police do, never ever heard of such action.
Hi David,
I am a legal advocate, mentor, consultant, community services provider, Program Director, have 2 college degrees, was a UNION bartender in Northern California, have conducted thorough background checks (Federal, State, County, City) of potential adult mentors for minor children and I can ASSURE you, having a liquor license, while it may be lucrative, does NOT guarantee child safety.
1. We are not discussing serving minors in a bar. That is a WHOLE different cat.
2. I specifically did not call you or anyone else a name directly, unless the shoe fits, then as the saying goes, "wear it."
3. Infants and minors normally do NOT have drivers licenses nor Photo ID's, that I am aware of, anyway.
The purpose of AirBnB is for travelors and hosts to enjoy affordable, trustworthy, safe lodging.
Being extra safe and careful to ensure illegal activity is not occuring should and is part of a AirBnBs vital mission statement of the agency, otherwise, it would not function well.
The law does not allow for the right of ignorance nor stupidity as a plea of innocence.
You are not advocating human trafficing, by arguing with me are you? If 99.9 % of hosts allow any and all children to stay without any safety guards to protect children, then this is an abomination and must be stopped.
You would agree? YES or NO?
Nobody has the right to use and abuse or exploit minors. PERIOD. Hosts are morally bound to ensure the safety of all minors as well as protect AirBnB and all the hosts worldwide from the proliferation of exploitation.
Logic:
Can a minor stay at any AirBnB without proof of ID and consent by the parents when not accompanied by a parent or guardian?
YES or NO?
If Yes:
Can you be liable by law if the child is not legally allowed to be without parent or guardian?
If Yes: Research your local laws and be a responsible host.
If No: Research your local laws and talk to your local law enforcement agency and ensure you are within the law.
What legal responsibility do Hosts have when it comes to housing minors on their premises?
Is ignorance allowable in a court of law as a legitimate plea of innocence?
YES or NO?
I am not attacking you, but if this is a topic that needs to be addressed, then so be it. It is the right thing to do.
Sincerely,
Crystal

You think that insane diatribe, with your entire CV and resume included, gives you the sanctimonous right to tell David or anyone else how to run their business?
You are a selfrighteous scold to the extreme!
I have the very same issue today. A 20 year old man has booked my property and disclosed that he is bringing his 17 year old girlfriend. I'm not comfortable with it at all. On the phone with airbnb support now for 20 minutes trying to negotiate being able to cancel without penalty! It's a values based decision that I don't want to be involved in any way allowing a 17 year old girl to be in this situation - regardless of whether she is consenting or not.
Ok so airbnb have stated that they will cancel the booking without penalty - excellent! However it was stated that they'd assist the guest in finding an alternative booking...... sigh....
I’m suffering the same situation. The host recognized she was a minor. I contacted AirBnB to report what happened and I ended with all my listings suspended! With no right to defend. They set a call for two day latter. This is not how a family behaves.
I’m so frustrated with Airbnb
I got a reservation this week
A male verified by Airbnb and a second guest no name and no verification.
I asked the guest to identify the second person and he declined by saying that he will not provide his minor son identification
Till then I didn’t know the second guest was a underage.
I replied to the guest saying that I can’t accept those kind reservation
He replied saying that it was inappropriate for me to bullying him to have his child data
Airbnb canceled my reservation and gave me a $200 penalty
Airbnb policy is disrespectful by support those kind guests
To protect my reputation and my property I got $200 fee
Not acceptable
