Bad odor in Airbnb

Staying in a new condo which is very nice however the bedroom, and bathroom smell strongly of dog pee. It is within 2 feet of where my head meets the pillow so it is impossible to escape.

I contacted the host and he said it myst have been the previous guests and that he can’t do anything about cleaning the carpet which I understand but sleeping next to such a disgusting smell doesn’t work. Also, the day we arrived I placed my duffel bag full of clean clothes in the corner where the dog pee ended up being do ALL of my clothes smell of dog pee.

I don’t know how to handle this!

u need to move out. & ask airbnb to get your money back, & suspend the listing until he has the carpets cleaned. they also need to pay your receipts for professionally dry cleaning everything. that is filthy!

if I rent to people with dogs which is rare I ask them to pay for the entire house to be sanitized when they leave. there is no excuse for this & if he wants to take guests w pets, then he needs to roll up his sleeves & take responsibility of the house being properly cleaned before new people move in...I'd rather lose 1-2 days in rent & have the house presented to a new guest as clean.

Follow the advice on the booking confirmation. If the host is unwilling or unable to fix the issue (he could easily have arranged with you for the carpets to be cleaned) then ask Airbnb to cancel the booking and help you find alternative accommodation @Christine3555

@Christine3555  Your host should definitely be sending a crew or himself to clean the carpets.  There is an OTC enzyme, called Nature's Miracle, that will probably get the scent out of your clothes.  It's pretty expensive, but your host should pay the cost of this also.  Good luck.

Hi @Christine3555

How did you get on?  Was the advice from @Mark116@Helen3 and @Christina163 useful in getting this sorted out?  Please let us know, I hope you were able to get a resolution with the host.

Thanks to those who replied with some advice on how to handle this!

Well as Airbnb suggested, I contacted host, then once it was determined that he wasn’t going to do anything then I moved on to opening a case with Airbnb. Got the case opened but somehow I closed the case without realizing it. All the pop up questions that followed at the bottom got in the way and I must have agreed to close the case. So I called Airbnb the next morning (check out day) and found out that yes I accidentally closed my case! Crap. So they reopened it.
in the end I was told to

contact them sooner next time (I truly tried!) and I received $127 CDN refunded out of $429 CDN.
I was told that an odor is impossible to prove.

I’m not too impressed with Airbnb on handling this, however I did play a part in the process of it all.

The host, well I’m clearly not impressed with them!

Thank you for the timely responses from everyone! It sure helped to lighten the stress.
