Damage

Just wondering what hosts general feel about items that get broken or damaged in your home. I had a stand up fan that our last guest decided to place up on a table ( it’s a floor fan) and they knocked it down and broke half of the stand off. As they were leaving they told me what they had done! Also said it still stands, which it does and it still works, which it does! But now for my next guests I have a fan that looks dodgy and is far less than in the condition it was. They also pulled the bedding from the bed which I thought was nice until I pulled it back from the machine and discovered stains that definitely required prewash treatment, luckily these have come out. But if I hadn’t found that before the wash I doubt the result would have been ok!

scratches on a coffee table that they sat coasters overto cover  as well!
I expect some wear and tear but kind of thought these guys were not great!

thoughts please

How much was the fan? @Sylvia567

If it is an expensive one then claim - it doesn't matter if it still works, if it is broken/wobbly you can't use it for future guests. I would also claim for coffee table repairs if they can't be easily repaired.

Obviously leave an honest review and say that sadly you wouldn't be able to recommend as future guests as  they broke a floor lamp by putting it on a table and then knocking it over and only let you know on departure. And left scratches on the coffee table and stains on the bedding that needed pre-treatment which they didn't notify you about. (presuming you ask guests to notify you about damages in your guest book).

Thank you

I have written an honest review and marked I do not want these guests back. Just felt from reading some other comments on similar incidents that I would possibly be opening a can of worms. I am still finding my feet with Airbnb and hosting in my home. These people were mostly upfront but still dodgy! You know the kind  ... polite say the right thing and TOTALLY. take advantage

Have the guests left a review for you yet? @Sylvia567

I know some hosts won't ask for the costs of damage for fear of a bad review, but personally I think this shouldn't be a reason to not ask for the costs of the damage.

As you know you need to do this before your next guests check in.

I have a rule for charging guest, of it is something below R$5 (1.5 dollars) I do not charge, it is the cost of doing business. If it is a penny over that, I send a money request.

My prices are low, if I don't charge for damages It can really hurt me.

I just noticed today a glass missing in one of my units, it costs about R$3, so I wont chage. If it had been a plate R$15, I would have charged.

If we became afraid of bad reviews because of things like this, than we are going to loose money.

Remember, we can reply to bad reviews. If I got one because of something like this I would respond with (even if the review did not say anithing about being charged, if the guests lied about something)... Sorry you feel the need to act this way, but when there is damage to our property we do charge for it. Please be more considerate when staying in someone elses home.
