Payment of deposit using gift card

Hi

I was given 2 gift cards to use to make a booking on AirBnB for a family trip.

Why can't I pay the deposit using the gift cards, I want to pay the deposit now using them, and pay the remaining balance when it's due by debit card.

I did, initially I was told that I could and they tried to talk me through it, however then they looked into it further and was told no i couldn't, but they couldn't tell me why.

I fail to see why I can't use a gift card to pay the deposit. Surely they are still getting paid.
