Getting ready for World Clean Up Day 2023

World Clean-up Day is an annual global social event aimed at combating the global solid waste problem in our natural environment.  It was started by a group called “Let's do it” in Estonia in 2008 when 50,000 residents came together to clean up the entire country in five hours.   Since then the movement has gathered momentum and has inspired millions of people around the world to get out and clean up the environment around them. The World Clean Up Day is now one of the biggest environmental events in the world.

This year World Clean up day falls on Saturday 16th of September. While this date does not work for everyone you may find a more suitable date for your event in the two weeks following this date. We are sharing a video of how our Host Advisory Board members are going to celebrate this day.

Taking part in World Clean up Day is a great way to get your hosting community together and make a difference to the environment around us. Many Airbnb host groups took part in the Earth Day community clean-up event in April 2023 and had a great time getting to know one another while cleaning up their local environment. If you missed out on starting a community clean-up, now is your chance to get your hosting community together and have some fun getting to know one another while you clean up. Many hosts leaders commented that they found putting together the Earth Day clean up event earlier this year very easy and the impact they had was immense. Check our guide here : How to Organize a Clean-Up Day Events

Our challenge in support of World Cleanup Day was to start an awareness movement among many Spanish-speaking hosts. Yesterday, dozens of hosts from Latin America joined our virtual meeting and warmly received our call with a green heart and very positive comments.

We are especially grateful for the prominent participation of  Mauricio Bernal, a committed member of the Host Advisory Board and a community leader from Cancun, Mexico, who spoke about the importance of sustainable actions in our community of hosts and the benefits this brings us, not only in terms of the community but also for the world.

We feel very honored by the presence of hosts from Colombia, Mexico, Panama, the United States, and our beautiful Dominican people. We thank everyone who supported this noble cause and urge everyone to strive for more and not stop until reachinDia Internacional de la limpieza Mundial 2.pngDia internaciona de la limpieza mundial1.jpgDia Internacional Limpieza 3.pngg the top.

Well I’m still on holiday in Canada and Alaska, but we’ll certainly do a local Host club clean up day when I get back to England!

I love reading about the creative clean up ideas people come up with.  Humans are so good at solutions. I just wonder about the greed so much, and the stupidity of us humans. I think about it a lot………

So much is talked about healing the harm, undoing the harm to earth, healing the hurt.

The mad part of this is that nature can heal itself , much quicker than we can realise, and all nature needs is humans to leave it alone, not “heal” it!

Yesterday on September 16th, Tokyo-Tama host community organized Clean Up Meetup at Shinjuku district in Tokyo.
One of our leaders, Miyoko Kanai had organized such meetup for more than 10 times in the past. So it’s kind of “usual activity”.  But thank you for letting us know that this is global event happening around the world.
I’m excited to post our activity of yesterday Meetup.
We also enjoyed eating delicious soba in the traditional building with a guest from France.

Maharashtra Hosts with a guest met the needs of the day at the religious site of Baanganga - Team up to Clean up, today on the 16th September 2023. Sent a message through recycled placards to the local community to preserve the hygiene and avoid littering around this most significant place.

Thank you felicity for your involvement!

I am lucky enough not to be surrounded by rubbishes around here, and unfortunately it would take the time that I don’t have…

so I have opted for a slack but useful solution for the planet…

this year I have decided to clean up my datas: I am getting rid of emails that are obsolete or not useful, especially those containing pictures or videos knowing that they are stored in the cloud, in other words in mega storage hardwares, factories that produce lots of heat and need to be cooled down. In France they even reuse the heat they produce to warm up buildings in winter… (Tip : Data center heat reuse: How to make the most of excess heat)

do we really need to keep all these? I am even thinking of lightening the weight of my pics describing my listing, and avoiding pictures of my surroundings found on the net…

i know it is a drop in the sea… but it is one drop down…

Hi @Marielle135

What a great idea - there are so many ways we can clean up our world.  I think many of us forget about the impact our on line presence has and the emissions that are needed to keep it going!

Wow! Thank you for this useful information Marielle, something I never considered before, but will also spend time cleaning up my "cyber" space.

I just had never thought of what the cloud looks like on the ground when you consider power and mega storage hardwares.

Incredible perspective for sure
