I've had my calendar blocked since mid-March but as "stay-at-home" restrictions start to loosen up over the next month or two I'm sure future reservation requests may begin to trickle in again. My area has fared well but obviously I'm hesitant to host guests in my home from harder hit areas. I'm fortunate in that I don't depend on the Airbnb income to pay my bills, but it's certainly been a nice "cushion" for me when I am actively hosting.
Short term rentals will be allowed in my area again beginning May 8th. I want to open my home again, but I'm not sure when I'll be ready to do that. I do know when I do, at minimum I'll be implementing stricter cleaning protocols and a minimum of 2 days between guests. Right now my calendar is only blocked through May, but I may extend that depending on what happens in the next two weeks. I'm not worried about requests coming in for future dates as most people aren't planning that far in advance due to the situation we're all in.
For homeshare hosts, what do you think needs to happen before you open your home again and what new procedures might you be utilizing?
Yes, @Helen427 hundreds of thousands of people have, in fact, died of coronavirus in a short time frame. And just becuse someone had a pre-existing condition, doesn't mean they would have died if they hadn't contracted the virus. They might have lived for another 20 years.
You appear to have little regard for human life.
Yes hundreds of thousands of people have died, however as I stated, there's many unknown factors which we will never know about and rightly so as people are entitled to dignity & privacy in life.
One's health information is one's private business.
Frankly I'm appalled with those who use "Free media" to plaster other peoples photographs and information claiming those people have Covid19/Coronavirus when those people going about their lives, including transported into hospitals, have not consented to the use of their images.
New Zealand projections from the experts was 80,000 deaths.
That's around 70,000 more deaths than the Influenza Epidemic ( Spanish flu) in 1918 that we had in New Zealand.
We have an average of 90 deaths a day in NZ from a variety of causes, including vehicle accidents, suicide or whatever else.
You can be reassured I do indeed have regard for human life.
I live in a mixed age range community where there's Aged Care Facilities nearby and often chat to those delightful sage people who live there on our travels.
Last week I was blessed to have an informative conversation with a 100 year old lady & her 86 year old friend, both of whom are intelligent, competent women who are fed up with being told they must stay at home locked inside & spoken down to by our Government about health matters.
The Police also have had concerns about the lawfulness of a lockdown.
They have high risk jobs that impacts on there health to and have recreation needs outside of work for their own well being that have also been impacted on.
There are police officers who are surfers & swimmers who have questioned why people were told those activities were forbidden whilst under lockdown during our summer when people traditionally are outside.
They are the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff with law & order.
Domestic violence in NZ during lockdown has escalated.
A Judge has also issued a decision on behalf of a gentleman who had traveled back to New Zealand from the UK, is healthy with no Covid19 symptoms, who was denied the lawful right by Director of Health Ashley Bloomfield, to see his dying father.
The Judge, a woman I'm proud to say, has cited errors of law in relation to people been denied basic legal rights enshrined in New Zealand law and allowed the gentleman to see his dying father ( not Covid19) who had asked where his son was.
It's just one of many appalling cases we have been advised about where people have requested to see family who are ill or dying on Compassionate grounds, that has surfaced.
We have women who are pregnant been denied basic health care and told use portable showers on the street which disgusted me.
We can all learn from each other including informing people about their basic human rights enshrined in LAW across the world.
It may surprise you I do have a background in law.
All the best, keep safe.
As I keep saying to people, it's not about you!
@Peter69, if the test is negative, will you share your home with guests anyway or wait until you've been exposed?
I have blocked off my St. Lucia guesthouse until mid-June, and will extend it until the end of August. The guests don't share living spaces with us, but there is a shared guest kitchen and pantry area. During the temporary closure, we are going to renovate the guest suites to have their own kitchenettes, and will power down all of the appliances in the shared kitchen. We think this will appeal to many guests, and alleviate some of their concerns about using high-touch amenities with others. We are also going to change the door lock for the guest's entrance into the guesthouse so they can do self-checkins. This will likely reduce the number of locals staying with us, because many do not have credit/debit cards, or feel uncomfortable with using them, for prepayment, and usually pay cash upon arrival. Since we will wait at least 24 hours after checkout before cleaning a guest suite and laundering the linens, we will no longer offer to wash a guest's personal items when we do laundry. We will encourage our guests to wear facial masks whenever they are in the common areas of the guesthouse.
Nothing new here.
Borders are still closed, 50% of the flights cancelled. Restaurants, malls and cinemas-closed.
It's the 53-rd day, since the state of emergency was enacted. We are not under complete lockdown, but we can't travel free outside of the city. Only with permission and with a bunch of documents.
Near 1600 infected, more then 70 died, other 40 are in critical condition. 20,000 are under quarantine, at home. 12% of the infected are medics. Two regional hospitals are almost closed, because they don't have enough personnel.
Parks, recreational areas an swimming pools will be opened this week. Wearing of protective masks in closed spaces is mandatory.
@Dimitar27Thanks for the update.
Have you as citizens had the democratic right to have a say what you can & can't do?
It's great your parks & swimming pools are open as it's fast coming up to summer in Europe.
Take care & enjoy the great outdoors
Almost everything is as usual.
As you may know Henry and I host a lot of long-term, international (exchange student) guests in our private room :-)) and we've decided not to host any guests for the remainder of this year.
This is mainly because of 2 reasons.
First..... we share our kitchen with guests.... and this isn't something we want to do with a guest who will *probably NOT* have the level of cleanliness/hygiene practices that Henry and I feel is acceptable. It was hard enough to get guests to clean up their own crumbs and drips from the kitchen table after a meal. LOL~ With the more intense level of sanitizing and cleaning we'd have to do due to covid-19 concerns, the extra work (picking up and cleaning up after the guest for OUR health and safety) wouldn't be worth the money we make unless we doubled our rates :-))
Second, we only host international guests because technically, hosting locals is illegal. And recent reports are showing that majority of new covid-19 confirmed cases are all international incoming travelers. We have no intention of ever hosting a local...... and we don't want to open our home to someone from a high-risk group.
So it was a bit of a no brainer for us. We're still undecided about the 2021 spring semester.
@Suzanne302 , thank you for posting this question. This thread is helpful as I've been struggling with the same questions. I offer my Cape Cod full-time residence both as a hosted (how I started five years ago) and private rental, a second listing I added last year. I still enjoy sharing my home with guests but have more private bookings. Massachusetts vacation STRs are suspended through May 18, and as Superhosts, we have up to May 15 to cancel reservations without penalty for reservations made before March 15. This applies to all of my reservations. I've had a handful of cancellations and rebookings for 2021 but am still mostly booked for 2-3 day visits mid-June through Labor Day with same-day turnovers. Having contacted guests to explain our state's current ban, 14-day self-quarantine for travelers, and cancellation of all local events (road race, film fest, etc.) through August 31, they still want to come and are waiting to see what the state decides. My reservations will need to be altered (shortened) and some canceled to add appropriate time for me to clean between bookings. Without knowing the state's May 18 update, I will need to make decisions and notify guests on May 15.
hello @Anne226
how are you getting on over there?
We have finally had lockdown impositions reduced here in New Zealand
Have a look at Simon Dolan's Twitter feed about the legal challenge he's got going in the UK, most interesting documents are surfacing about how we in the wider world have been treated, with "scaremongering" despite been told not to be fearful by the very ones who have pushed their barrow, which has been very disturbing behaviour & disruptive to the majority who are simply trying to go about one's life in peaceful enjoyment.
hang in there , things will flip around for all of us for the better
