Hello hosts,
My name is Jorge, and I’ve been hosting on Airbnb for about +4 years. I’ve been fortunate enough to maintain Superhost status during this time. I’m posting here to seek guidance on a difficult situation I’ve been dealing with for the past 2–3 weeks.
For context, my mother owns a property in Mexico and is not very familiar with the Airbnb platform. A few years ago, I convinced her to use Airbnb as a way to run her rental business. Since I understand the platform, I helped set up the account and created the listing under my profile as the host, with my mother added as a co-host.
That said, the property is located in Mexico, all payouts go directly to her bank account in Mexico (in Mexican pesos), and the tax information on the account is also linked to her.
Everything worked well in previous years, but I recently discovered that Airbnb reported the 2024 earnings to the IRS under my name. I’ve contacted customer support multiple times and there has been an open case for weeks. I’ve already provided proof that I do not receive or benefit from this income and demonstrated that payouts are not sent to any bank account associated with me.
I’ve requested that Airbnb correct this by updating the tax form to show $0 under my name, notifying the IRS accordingly, and issuing the appropriate non-U.S. tax form for the earnings generated in Mexico under my mother’s name.
So far, I’ve spoken with more than 20 agents and exchanged over 30 emails. Unfortunately, the experience with customer support has been extremely poor. I’ve had to explain the situation repeatedly, and responses often come every 1–2 days asking questions I’ve already answered. It feels like the case is going nowhere.
I’m especially disappointed because Superhosts are supposed to receive better support, but that hasn’t been my experience at all.
Has anyone dealt with a similar issue or knows how to escalate and resolve this properly? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Hello @Jorge3163
Unfortunately you created this situation when you set your mothers listing up under your profile rather than what you should have done which is to help her set it up under her name with yourself added as cohost .
If you had done that - you could have set this up with no income as the cohost then you wouldn't be liable for tax.
can you try making your mum the main host and provide her tax details and make yourself the cohost.
Helen, Airbnb has a dedicated section for taxpayer information that is used for tax reporting. This should have been taken into account before commenting.
No need to be rude when people are trying to help you @Jorge3163
as you know Airbnb works differently in different countries . So I don't necessarily see what you see.
Sorry @Helen3 didn't mean to sound rude. I was trying to say is that Airbnb has Tax Payer Information which is the source of truth to who is responsible to hold taxes. Being either host or co-host is not a factor to force tax withholding, it's not a reliable source.
