On September 5th 2023, the New York City Democrat Politicians Plan to Close Down Permanently
Airbnb for Short Term Renting. Hundreds of Small Homeowners Might Face Bank Foreclosures.
Has Anyone Heard Any Updates About This ??

Hi @Carlos300 ,
Thank you for sharing about this initiative with our members. I wanted to let you know that I have merged all your posts to this one in order to keep all the ongoing discussions in one place for our members.
As Community Center is more of a global forum, it might be a bit difficult to specifically get in touch with NYC Hosts. If you may like, you can also get in touch with New York Hosts through our NYC Local Host Club here : https://www.facebook.com/groups/830896930840373.
@Mike-And-Jane0 I would and do interpret it that if Airbnb can be regulated out of existence in New York City, one of it's largest markets, that it can happen anywhere. I have been saying for years that Airbnb's public affairs/government relations function is abysmal and it is.
No we have had major restrictions in London one of Airbnb's largest markets for years @Carlos300 (90 day limit for all whole listings) and the STR market has actually increased.
And Airbnb is just one marketing channel you can use to promote your STR business so not quite sure why you are putting the blame at their door.
Helen :
Please let me Explain why.
In My Neighborhood, Over the Past Couple of Years,
Many Struggling Middle Class Small Home Owners,
have been Flooded with Deadbeat Tenants and
Scam Artist Tenants.
They Pay One Month's Rent and One Month's Security Deposit
and Thats It. My Friends who Own 2 Family Homes have Lost
Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars in Lawyer's Fees
and in Landlord/Tenant Court.
Carlos.
Sorry problems with long term lets (I am a landlord in the UK where we have similar tenancy rights so sympathise) doesn't explain why you are blaming
Airbnb alone out of all the listing companies for the fact that NYC has introduced further STR restrictions....genuinely confused.
I'd say whether you are a long term or short term host carefully vetting those you let out to helps ensure you have a happy experience either with guests or tenants @Carlos300
Helen :
I'am Not Really Blaming Airbnb Only.
But Airbnb has had Only One Sponsored Host Protest Rally in Manhattan so far. And the Rally was During the Work Week,
when Everyone was Working.
The Government Registration Process for Obtaining
a Permit to Continue with Airbnb for Less than One Month's Rentals essentially Will Eliminate 75% of "ALL" Airbnb Hosts
in New York City.
My Mother was Born in My House that I inherited,
and without Airbnb, I will have to Sell It.
(and the Real Estate Market is Not Good for Selling Homes Now)
Carlos.
@Carlos300. Hi Carlos, its certainly news for any STR hosting located in a major International city. I do see a ripple effect. Not sure what those hosts can do apart from locate themselves where they are not in direct competition with hotels or accept hosting more than 30 days at a time.
Last week I was watching on Netflix a movie about a woman who inherits a place in Crotia and mentions when visiting to that neighbour about doing STR. The words Airbnb were repeatedly said with such negative connotations and the spiel went on for more than a minute. So its gone mainstream...
France :
Thanks for your reply.
True, it seems little can be done, but when the New York City Politicians Start Seeing Less Money from Ex-Aibnb Host's Real Estate Taxes, because of No More Guests,
maybe They will Soften Their Ultra Strict Rules.
Carlos.
Airbnb Sent an Email to All New York City Hosts that Read :
Starting Monday August 14, Airbnb Will Permanently Block All Calendar Dates to Prevent All Unregistered Host's
New Reservations for September 5 onwards.
Well there you go Carlos, looks like Airbnb have come to the party and are on your side, they are working actively with NY authorities to stamp out unregistered and illegal STR rentals.
That should clean the hosting scene up in NY and make it easier for guys like you to compete. I just hope they follow through on this and it's not just shallow words.
It's about time Airbnb got proactive about non compliance, thanks for posting, I am pleased to see this, bet you are too!
Lets hope the other platforms follow suit!
Cheers.......Rob
Wrong Robin :
Just 2 Examples from the Huge List of Requirements to be Able to Receive the Coveted Short Term Renting Registration Number from the New York City Politicians,
is that your Home can Not have Any Open Small or Large Building or Fire Code Violations
from the Past and Present. I have a Street Side Walk Code Violation from 1989, from My Parent's Era, and It will Cost about $ 4000. to Fix. And I have Very Little Money to Spare,
because Most of my Social Security Check and "Airbnb" Monies Goes Right Back
to the Government in High Real Estate Taxes and House Liability Insurance and Sky High
Utilities. And "Second" I have to Install in My Entire House, Including the Basement where No Guest Stay, Electrical Powered Smoke Alarms, by Government Approved Licenced/Bonded Electricians.
its crazy.
@Carlos300 your examples do not seem unfair if the City is trying to ensure all lodging is safe.
Mike and Jane :
I forgot to Mention that the Government Employees Handling the Registration Permit Numbers Department will have Access to Host's Social Security Numbers and Host's Credit Card Account Numbers and All Your Personal Life Information also.
For Example : your House Deed, your Car Insurance Account Number and Details, Your Bank Account Number and How much Money is in your Account, etc.
If One of Them Steals Your Identity ~~~ then What do you Do ??!!
@Mike-And-Jane0 Installing hard wired smoke alarms is very expensive, and that's what I think is required now. Unless I'm mistaken, this is what NYC wants, not simply installing the self contained smoke alarms that you can buy at the hardware store and install yourself. If an electrician is needed, then it is the hard wired type...completely unnecesssary and again, designed to make it impossible for almost anyone to be able to use the platform. Stealth ban.
@Mark116 Hard wired and linked smoke alarms are a required fitment in all new and refurbished houses in the UK. They are the only safe way to ensure a fire in one part of the house is heard in all parts and to mitigate against people not replacing the batteries in their alarms.
Perhaps we have higher safety standards in the UK but in no way can these be called a stealth ban on Airbnbs.
