Here is the most coherent information I have found about the new ordinance in Los Angeles, going into effect July 1, 2019.
https://planning.lacity.org/ordinances/docs/HomeSharing/adopted/FAQ.pdf
It's sad and strange that airbnb isn't doing any grassroots outreach even in a huge market like LA. I guess that's why they allow hotels to list on here now, because they've already written off their original host concept.
I didn't know Airbnb was allowing hotels to list on their site.
What is Airbnb and Home Away and platforms like these doing to push back and re write this ordinance?
and how can we get involved?
Read down the thread.
HomeAway Partners and Friends,
Tomorrow, the Los Angeles Vacation Home Rental Alliance will host its fourth action meeting.
Action meetings thus far have been a great success, and serve as an ideal opportunity to network with homeowners, property managers, and business owners.
Now more than ever, it is vital for homeowners to speak up and steadily increase the pressure on Councilmembers prior to the July 1st deadline. The Planning Committee has started the drafting process – however regulations are not yet set, so the time is now to shape the vacation home rental ordinance and ensure it aligns with reasonable guidelines for the homeowners of Los Angeles.
The action meeting agenda will consist of the following – introductions, handwritten letters, and video testimonials. We will notify you all immediately of any City Hall updates, but in the meantime, these action meetings are crucial to ensure the vacation home rental industry continues to thrive in our city.
Action Meeting Details:
Date: Thursday, April 11th, 2019
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Location: 1957 N. Alexandria, Los Angeles, CA 90027
What We Will Provide:
We will be providing food and light refreshments, along with the perfect opportunity to TAKE ACTION!
Stationary, pens, writing samples and letter templates will also be provided.
Parking Information:

any updates, I just join the group
Hey guys! We just started to airbnb our guest house. We heard about the new laws but are slightly confused. My fiancé triend to get specific answer from the city and no one responded to his email. We own our property and we live in the main house. Our guest house is a separate house with a separate address (because you have to have a second address for an ADU). So because we don’t technically live in the guest house that is on our primary residential property, does that mean we can’t rent it? We have been trying to get answers and we just can’t figure it out.
this is one of the FYI from the ordinance, moreover, you should check if your secondary dwelling isn't RSO on this site: http://zimas.lacity.org/ as it looks like short-term renting RSO units is frowned upon as well
How is “Primary Residence” defined? A primary residence is defined as the home where the host resides for at least six months of the year. If there are multiple units on a property, the primary residence is the unit in which the host resides. For example, if a host owns a duplex and lives in one of the units, they are the primary resident of that unit in which they live. The second unit is not the host’s primary residence, even if they own it. Proof of primary residence will be determined at the time of registration and/or renewal.
i wouldn't on any of these vacation rental sites for less than 31 days.... you will be fined.
so much for owning our own properties. 😞
So it says
"The Department of City Planning is developing an online registration portal that will allow hosts to submit required documentation and process application fees."
Does anyone know if an online portal has been created yet???? Where do we register ????
Want to at least be able to rent my home unit legally starting July 1st...they're not making it easy...
Thanks for any info.
I’m currently talking with air bnb to get in the agenda for Highland Park Neighborhood Council Meeting. Anyone in Highland Park? What we can do is reach out to your neighborhood council, get on the agenda for their next meeting and ask for their support in getting an ammendment to allow RSOs and full home short term rentals. They will need to do a community impact report which is what the city planning office is supposed to do. However, planning office takes forever! If our individual neighborhoods take it upon themselves we can really speed up the process.
I'm trying to figure out what we need to do to avoid citations. I can't find anything on the LA City planning site. online registration is not yet available. Is there another way to register?
Has anyone updated their listing(s) to reflect changes required per the new restrictions?
Same here, nothing on the LA planning site. Reached out to Airbnb and they're clueless. There's a lot of different threads saying starting July first we need a permit number but I'm sure Airbnb won't take down nothing cause they don't have a clue about this. Not sure what to do.
I called the city today to see what sort of documentation they are requiring to prove my home is occupied by me. Was supposed to get a call back but haven't received yet. Have called various departments to see where I can register and no one seems to know much. I was told on June 17th the city council will be voting on something related to the July 1st ordinance. I can't find any recent communication on the City's website and am becoming a bit anxious as my home is rented throughout the summer.
I know. This is incredibly annoying. No information anywhere!
