Conflicting information about reopening a cancelled account

I've been a traveller (and, later, host) with Airbnb since it launched in the UK - I was such an early adopter, in fact, I was at the launch party and met the founders!

A few weeks back, for personal reasons, I cancelled my account. I received an automated email from Airbnb confirming I'd done this, but saying 'you can reinstate your account at any time'.

No, I couldn't, said the manager on the customer careline in the Philippines I spoke to, when I went to do so a week later! So why did the email say that I could? He promised a call back, when I urged him to investigate further with the website's developers, but no call was received. I emailed Airbnb's UK press office in frustration (I'm a journalist), but they didn't reply either.

Anyone else have success, like a member whose experience I read about in another community thread, whose account was indeed reinstated during a telephone conversation with a senior member of staff, and can give me a named person I can speak to? That poster said the careline team had simply not been correctly briefed. If so, this should be rectified. And, at the very least, those automated emails saying cancelled accounts can be reopened need to be turned off!

@Lizzie, could you advise, please? I note how helpful you've been to other posters experiencing issues. Many thanks in anticipation.

If you deactivated your account, @Gill94, you can reactivate it, but if you deleted it you can't. See the article, below. Not sure why you thought the press office could help tho as it's a personal issue?

Thank you for your reply,  @Gordon0. Why then, do you imagine, I received the automated email from Airbnb with a non-working click-through inviting me to reinstate my account at any time? Very curious...

I contacted the press office when I was not able to follow the steps in the aforementioned email - ironically,  they don't work if you have cancelled your account. Since you cannot then log in, you cannot even access the customer care number. I had to set up a new account just to do that.  I finally figured that out after the press office didn't reply to my desperate email - to the only UK contact available to non-members.

I imagine you'll never get to the bottom of why you got spurious email invite, @Gill94, but you now know the facts. A quick search of that search engine would have revealed their UK number (020 3318 1111).

No, @Gordon0, actually, it's not that straightforward to Google (other search engines are available 😄 ), though that was naturally my first port of call. I've just tried again to check I hadn't misremembered. No luck. Reverse-Googling it (ie, searching for the number itself), however, brings up this frustrated post on one website, suggesting I'm not the only one who found it tricky to track down!:
Airbnb Urgh! | - Mumsnet

12 Feb 2014 - BTW secret phone number if dialling from Britain is 020 3318 1111.

Anyway, spurred on by your post, I called the customer care line again and - success! - my account has been reinstated! Delighted to know it is possible after all.

For future reference it is not a secret number @Gill94  - all the ways of contacting Airbnb including the UK numbers are listing in the CONTACT AIRBNB post at the top of the forum you are posting in and also if you go to Airbnb Help and search for 'contact Airbnb' it will take you through some steps that will lead you to the phone number of your local customer services centre.

Glad you got it resolved.
