HOST ASKING FOR PASSPORT COPY BEFORE ARRIVAL JAPAN

Hi everyone!

Will be travelling to Osaka this upcoming October and wanted to ask whether if there's anyone here had experience with host in Japan asking for a copy of passport before we arrived at the place? Usually I only experienced when they ask upon our arrival at the place, but never heard of requesting a copy before we arrived there. Can anyone confirmed if this is legitimate?
