Pillow shams

How do you keep guests from sleeping on them? Just asking them not to? Show them all the extra pillows they can use? Not use pillow shams? thanks in advance.

@Pam336 You should assume that anything in your spaces will be used, and often in ways that are not your intent. I know I keep saying this, but all textiles really need to be cleaned between each guest. Even if they don't sleep on your shams, how do you know that their luggage which has been schlepped through airports and across sidewalks wasn't opened on top of a sham?

Is there any practical reason to have pillows in shams in a guest room?

You make a good point. I hadn't thought of that...about the suitcase dragged through who knows what....Thank you!

I've been thinking about pillow shams this past week, inspired by Costco's inclusion of 4 pillow cases in their sets of sheets!  Now I have the option using 4 pillow case covered pillows instead of 2 shams and 2 pillow cases.  I've noticed that my guests often place the sham covered pillows in the closet or on the dresser, clearly not wanting to sleep on them.  These are the softest shams I could find, so that they can be comfortably slept on.

Long story short, this week I've decided to replace the shams with pillow cases.  There are shams in the listing photos to look good.  I'll update if I receive any guest feedback!

@Stephanie6- my guests sleep with my pillow shams all the time and I launder them every time I have guests.  I happen to really like the look so I keep using them.  I have observed though, that it seems many guests don't sleep well laying down flat for various reasons.  I think they use them to simply prop up more and because I don't keep pillow cases on the many extra pillows I provide, I am guessing it's easier for them to use the pillows already inside the shams than to go to the effort to put pillowcases on pillows.  I would love to provide some of the shaped back rests that make it very easy to prop up in bed, but it would be impossible to clean them and to my knowledge, there are no covers made for them.

I've never seen the point of all these decorative pillows piled on the bed, that aren't actually meant to be used. I mean, I know they are there for decor purposes, but they just seem so useless. Put them on the bed after you make the bed in the morning, only to take them off and pile them up somewhere at night. Seems silly to me.

Why put something in the guest room that you actually don't want the guests to use? Better to put a lot of bed pillows of different types (some people like fluffy thick pillows, others prefer flatter) with regular pillowcases (if you go with a white look for the bedding, you could always get some colorful cases and put them on normal bed pillows to jazz it up).

There's a cute romantic comedy with Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston called Along Came Polly that has a whole scene about the decorative bed pillow/sham thing that's quite funny.

Just because something's is all the rage in home decor mags doesn't mean it makes sense or is desirable. I remember about 15 years ago, these teeny tiny bedside tables were featured in the decor mags. Normal bedside table height, but only about 12" square. There was barely space to put a small lamp, and there certainly wasn't any room to put any of the things humans normally have at the bedside, like a book, an alarm clock, a glass of water, your eyeglasses, your phone. My daughter, who follows those trends, bought some. Didn't last long before she gave them away, as they were useless.
